Title: Medical Expenses Deduction w HSA
Post by: goodenowb1 on February 11, 2019, 03:13:33 PM
We had a high $$$ of medical expenses in 2018 due to birth of a child. We have a HDHP w HSA and have been paying all expenses with after-tax dollars to build the HSA, saving receipts to be reimbursed in future years. My question is, is there anything to prohibit us from taking the medical expense deduction? I've searched and searched but can't find any articles on the topic.

If you haven't been reimbursed for those expenses from any source (including your HSA), then you can claim the medical expenses deduction (assuming you meet the threshold to itemize and your expenses are over 7.5% of AGI). Once you claim the deduction for those expenses, you won't ever be able to reimburse those same expenses from the HSA, though. It's one or the other.
