HSA limits for family/spouse
« on: July 27, 2016, 08:36:47 AM »
Now both my wife and I have access to an HSA. She's on her employers plan as an individual, while I have me and our son on my plan. So how much can each of us contribute to the HSA? from my reading we can do the $6,750 for a family plan (since I have child on mine) between the two of us. Split any way we want. Is this right? Or can we only do the $3350 each?

Thanks

Edit: or since I have "family coverage" can I do $6750 and she $3350?? The rules I got from the provider are unclear.
Edit2: apparently this is not allowed by the IRS

From Publication 969, it says that if either spouse has family coverage, it's treated as though both do. They can spilt the family HSA limit equally or some other way, but it's just one family limit for all of you. No family limit for you plus single limit for her. However if you got divorced... (just kidding)

Is there an incentive for you to have two different health plans?  Like lower payroll contributions when combined rather than paying family on one?  Maybe both employers provide company match or 'seed' contributions?  If so, that's very nice.  Combined, you still can't go over the annual family limit.

I have to look into the exact costs. Mine is fully employer paid, including for family. But my wife don't pay very much for hers and get $1200 into the HSA from her employer (as do I). Which she would then loose, at least so I assume.

Thanks for answers. I've read more too and imdeed the family limit goes for both of us, no matter what.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
