Handling 1099-SA with Excess HSA Contributions
« on: February 02, 2019, 03:18:59 PM »
I over-contributed to my HSA in 2017, but withdrew the excess amount before the deadline in 2018. My 2017 tax return reflects this.

Recently, I received a 1099-SA which shows the amount I withdrew last year and indicates it's from excess contributions (code 2 -- box 3). On my 2018 return, how do I indicate that I've already paid taxes on this? I'm using HR Block's software.

The Q&A below describes my exact scenario (just in different years) and how to handle it in Turbo Tax.

It is my understanding that you should've received another 1099-SA for the 2017 tax year showing the "excess contribution" distributions. I don't believe the 2018 1099-SA should have any excess contributions (if you haven't made any, of course).
You may want to check with the bank. Please keep us posted.
