Filing ammended return 1040X
« on: January 10, 2018, 11:58:48 PM »
I need to file an amended return. The only thing I'm changing is adding in the fact that I prepaid taxes. TurboTax never imported this information the first time I filed. So my question is do I have to file the entire 107 pages or can I just send them the relevant parts that have changed (the first 2 pages)?

I also believe that a $50 penalty that the IRS made me for for "not pre-paying tax" was invalid. Hopefully I don't have to file anything else.

From a quick review of Instructions for Form 1040X (Rev. January 2017) - i1040x.pdf it appears you don't need to send much at all - but you should verify for yourself.

I've had to do a couple of amended returns. The documentation is minimal, though you might have to paper file vs. efile. Read through the instructions to verify what is needed of course, but isn't not the full return. I think it was the 1040X + whatever changed.

You don't send them a new tax return or a portion of a new tax return.  You fill out and send to them an amended return on Form 1040X, which is a different form from the 1040 that you probably sent them before.  Plus, as others have said, you should send them additionally whatever documentation they require, although in your case I don't think you'd need to send anything.

It's been a while since I've filled out a Form 1040X, but it's similar to the 1040 but has three columns where you put the original number, the new number, and the difference.  You only have to fill in the stuff that changed, which for you should be just two lines (one to list the estimated taxes paid and one to zero out the penalty).  You'll also need to fill in some of the key lines that haven't changed, like your AGI and taxable income.

It's not simple but it is straightforward.  Since you filled out your original returns with an online tax prep program like TurboTax, it may be able to guide you through a 1040X.

Oh, and don't blame TurboTax for not importing your estimated taxes; there is no place for it to import that information from as far as I know.  The only people that know about your estimated taxes are at the IRS, and they won't share that taxpayer information with TurboTax as it is private taxpayer data.

If you used TurboTax to file your taxes, you can amend your return within TurboTax. I had to do it last year. I did have to print out the forms and mail them off, but it was pretty painless. Turbotax even took me through the process.

Good luck!
