Do you have children or support someone?
« on: January 18, 2018, 09:23:54 AM »
Turbotax is asking me "Do you have children or support someone?" and I'm not sure how to answer.  (I'm not going to file with TurboTax, but I'm finding it easier to go through its step-by-step process).

My partner (unmarried) and I moved in together in May 2017.  At the time, he was unemployed and collecting unemployment.  I have since paid for 100% of our combined rent, utilities, and groceries.  In Oct he went to work full time, and then left on Jan 3 to pursue a start-up which has yet to result in income.

I'm uncertain as to whether the situation qualifies, either last year, or whether it will on 2018 taxes (obviously depending whether this new business ends up making enough money for him to cover 50% of combined expenses, right?)

I also found following document helpful for questions regarding meeting the requirements for support test - see dependency exemptions page 7-1:
