Buying health care through employer or state exchange
« on: November 14, 2016, 10:34:49 AM »
Is there any tax benefit to getting insurance through your employer vs. using a state exchange approved plan (IE Carefirst)?

Health insurance thru your employer is pre-tax, and usually at least partially subsidized.  If you are eligible for insurance thru your employer, and it's "affordable" (per the govt definition), then you are NOT eligible for any subsidies for insurance thru the state exchange.l, so you would pay full price.

I guess what i'm asking is, if both options are about the same price to me - does it matter if I buy through one or the other as far as any benefits?

Not sure how it could be same price, but even so, employer's would be pre-tax.
So if everything else is same (accounting for subsidies), then why wouldn't you opt for pre-tax and save on taxes?

I highly doubt the plans would be exactly the same.  There's endless variety in all of the different plans out there, and usually employer plans aren't available to the public.

Have you tried getting insurance thru the state exchange?  When we did (DH was between jobs)  it was maddening on our state's exchange - others may be better.  Open enrollment thru DH's employer is much easier.  Payments are deducted from your paycheck, pre-tax, no bills to remember to pay.

That pre-tax deduction is extra important because we have 2 kids in college.  That "income" isn't figured into the EFC, so they receive more aid.  If we received the income and purchased health insurance separately, our financial aid would be reduced, since our income looks higher (FAFSA doesn't adjust for health insurance expenses).

Great points thank you.

Unfortunately, my primary care doctor I've had forever no longer accepts the company plan so i'll be going with the state exchange option.

Thank you all for the input.
