Amending 2017 Tax Return because of updated 1098
« on: April 30, 2018, 04:55:18 PM »
Hi everyone-

I need to amend my 2017 tax return because after I filed I received an updated 1098 in the mail listing 2300 of MIP in box 5 that was not originally there in my first 1098 received. I use freetaxusa.com to complete my taxes. I already received my state refund (347) and paid what I owed for federal.

When I go to amend my tax form, it starts by saying my state refund is 0...is that because I already received it? Once I amend the 1098 it shows a state refund of 175...is this the amount I should receive in addition to the 347 I received a few weeks ago? Freetaxusa also want to charge me 15 dollars to amend, is there a way to do it for free even though this is the service I have used for years?

Thank you

Will this change your state return?  Many state returns are unaffected by mortgage interest.

Regarding the federal return, see File Form 1040X to Amend a Tax Return | Internal Revenue Service.  Doing it by hand isn't unreasonable.

Your state probably has a form analogous to 1040X, and probably even simpler to fill out.
