401k Total amount allowed per taxpayer
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:45:16 AM »
Ok Harry Sit on his financebuff blog wrote, "You have a separate $54k limit at each unrelated employer."
https://thefinancebuff.com/executing-mega-backdoor-roth-in-solo-401k.html#comment-21159

And this seems to be backed up by IRS website

“This limit is not reduced by the elective deferrals under his employer’s plan because the limit on annual additions applies to each plan separately.”
https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-401k-and-profit-sharing-plan-contribution-limits

So one could have 18,000 in salary deferrals at an employer.
And then if one had enough income in a self-employed solo business, one could have another 54,000 contributed in the solo 401k of that business as an employer deduction.

Yes, this is true. The $18k elective deferral limit applies across all employer plans, while the $54k limit is per plan.
