Woot. Woot! I Did It! Sayanora T-Mobile
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:35:26 PM »
I got the oversized card, watched  YouTube video to learn how to cut the SIM card to the proper size, and filed that puppy down.

It fits in the phone.

I paid $$ to AirAvoice.

My phone works!

I made my FIRST mobile phone call from my home in around 3 months TODAY. (T-mob stopped working in my house, and they would not let me out of the contract and told me to use wifi).

If you want my advice, get off your overpriced plan and listen to IP Daley's Superguide.

I will save around $21,000 over the next 10 years. (I am not taking what I spend on the new service into account, so it'll be less.)

BOTTOM LINE: WOOT!!!!! WOOT!!!!!

Oldtoyota, I feel like I've been with you on this particular trek nearly every step of the way, and I know every last bit of trial and tribulation through this migration that you've taken.

As such, this is the most welcome news I've read all week... congrats! :)

Just a reminder to those contemplating Airvoice - you can buy precut micro sims and nano sims (the nano for the iphone 5) on Ebay for just a couple of bucks, and save yourself the cutting and filing and swear words. Or if you like the swear words, do it yourself.

The cutting was actually easy. I made my own template because the online one did not work. I'd been through so much with T-mob at that point that it was no big deal to do it. Just for fun, I used Dante's Inferno as my work table. I felt this was important symbolism.

Congratulations! I was too lazy to cut the sim by myself and bought one of these for about $ 4:

Dead simple to use - pop the sim in and press. I travel a lot and buy a prepaid sim each time I'm out of the country so it comes in handy each time.

Great job!!!

And another thanks to IP Daley!! It's so amazing when you realize how much you've been overpaying, for *years*.

I've been using PlatinumTel for awhile now. I made the switch thinking that if I hated it, I could always get another contract with sprint or tmobile. It's not perfect, and things aren't as smooth as with the big carriers. But I also save ~$70/month, so that's worth some small amount of annoyance!

One thing the switch has really done though is it's helped retrain my phone behaviors. I used to have my iphone out constantly when I wasn't at home. Any time I had to wait for anything, even for a second, I'd whip it out and check Facebook, or the news, or my email, etc. Now that I'm doing the "pay as you go" plan it makes me think "do I actually want to pay money to check this right now?" The answer is usually no.

Fantastic!

I will admit, going cheaper does tend to sacrifice a bit of convenience, but the savings and the attitude changes towards your devices where you become less dependent upon them isn't just worth the money saved.... it gives you the opportunity to take control and enrich your life again instead of being controlled by your impulses and your electronics. :)

I find that when I get the urge to check something that used to require data, I'm usually within reach of a free wifi network.  When I'm not, I just give up and the world doesn't end, which is shocking considering what it was like when I had unlimited data.

Yes the world didn't end when I cut my Verizon bill from $150/mo to now $20/mo on airvoice. Nor did it end when I cut out my cable tv, started brownbagging lunches, cut my eating out bill by 80 percent etc. Cumulatively, I'm saving  over $1,000 a month more now that I have made a bunch of small changes. I am not unhappier. But I am getting richer. I like it!
