wooden handplanes
« on: July 22, 2017, 09:03:25 PM »
I was in the market for a hand plane jointer.  Have you priced those things recently?  Holy crap!  LN and LV are in the $400+ range.  I didn't want to spend that much, I also didn't want to look at the vintage market because it suck around here.  Buying off ebay is a crap shoot and I didn't want to have to restore someone else's junk.  So I found Infinity Tools.  They are known for making nice power tool cutting implements.  However, they also sell a line of wooden planes.  I saw the prices and was pleased. I also would like to have some rabbit planes, so I bought the set. Jointer, jack, smoother, scrub, and 5 rabbit planes.  All for the cost of a premium jointer.

Whoa Nelly,  I now understand what you are paying for when you buy premium planes.  These guys are inexpensive, but I probably have 15 or so hours in flattening and honing blades, smoothing and squaring soles, and learning all about regrinding bevels.

End result?  Very mustachian tools, but a PIA way to get there.  I often ask myself if I would purchase again if space aliens came in and stole the item.  Yes, I would do this again.  But only because I have the time and now the skill.  Beginner project, not so much.

I tried to attache the picture, but it's too big.  https://www.infinitytools.com/hand-tools/hand-planes/hand-plane-packages

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
