Wow you guys are truly badass.  We're car free in a city in Europe with decent public transport but that's miles easier.

Haha thanks! Missoula's bus system is actually very good and free! But we've yet to use it- bikes are much more fun :)

It’s actually much easier than we imagined, once we got the hang of it. The biggest issue so far is digging out the bike racks 😁

With the COVID situation, we are doubly thankful that we don't have a car sitting around doing nothing.

A colleague who has a car called his insurance company to try to get a rate reduction because he no longer uses his car to commute.  The savings came out to only $5/month, even though his premiums are high because it's a relatively new car.

That's awesome! We're car-free in the Bay Area but looking to move closer to the mountains. Can I ask how far you live from the grocery store?

Cheers!!

Well done, @Wekeeprollingdowntheroad! Do you mind sharing which neighborhood you live in? (please feel free to PM if this seems too public). I'm getting ready to move to Missoula (from Helena--with spouse and 2 small kids), and we're prioritizing walkable/bikable neighborhoods. I don't want to be way the heck out past Reserve, for example, and I know we can't afford the university district anymore--aside from that, I'm not sure which neighborhoods are best for walking or biking. It's not so much the distance as the safety that concerns me.

Good call on staying away from Reserve- I would also recommend keeping at least .5 miles away from The Povarello homeless shelter. In the 7 months we’ve been here we’ve only witnessed 2 aggressive homeless  incidents, (not close to us) but there are packs wandering through that area daily.

We picked the Northside and love it there. Wife walks/bikes every day by herself and she’s not once felt uncomfortable. Good mix of old and new people there. Very close to town and grocery and hiking and all can be accessed on multi use paths or quiet neighborhoods. No main streets to bike on. Free transit comes right through regularly too 😁

What's Missoula like? Do you recommend it? We are looking at possibly moving to Montana.

Thanks! I've heard a lot in favor of the Northside recently. We'll check it out for sure.

Great work on being Car Free for so long. I 've been reading this topic and your other one on living in Missoula.  I love your eye for photographs.
We will be staying a day or so in and around Missoula on August 11.  Any suggestions on can't miss activities? Any thing from museums to restaurants  to short hikes?
Thanks in advance.
We are driving through the Glacier NP Starting in Whitefish then south through Augusta and west to Missoula and then north to the Kalispell airport.
So any thing really cool along that route would be good to know.
