Welp, Black Friday deals were actually good for something
« on: November 20, 2018, 10:25:31 AM »
Professional-grade anything tends to not go on sale, especially not on Black Friday, but this was an exception.

GF ordered a Canon 5D Mark IV for $2799 on B&H.  Came with a battery grip (normally $300, was probably going to buy one next year), extra name-brand battery (normally $60, always useful), a fast-but-not-fast-enough 64GB SDXC card ($23 but worthless to her), and a camera bag she doesn't need ($55, but worthless to us).

Normal price is $3099 (with no accessories at all) these days, and she was planning on buying one before the end of the year anyway, so this was definitely a win.

Anyone else find practical things on Black Friday beyond an 80" 4K TV for $200 less than sticker price only available in store to fight over at 5pm on Thanksgiving?

The timing was excellent for us. We're selling our house, and our buyer wanted to buy a ton of our stuff. (Couch, entertainment center, TV, sound system and speakers, etc). So the Best Buy sales were very well timed. Bought a new TCL (we loved our old one from Costco) and a sound bar. The rest, we got off FB marketplace since other people are replacing their stuff right now. A lot of businesses are listing their sales early. Plus, for the TV and sound bar, I bought it on our citi card and used the "price rewind" website so if any sales are lower, they'll credit us the difference.

That sounds like great timing overall, but be careful about the "Price rewind" in this context.  Very often Black Friday products such as TVs will be a new specific model that will just different enough to not qualify for that sort of thing.  Model number TS400p vs TS400 for example (totally made up).

I'm looking at a pair of sandals and a pair of shoes on sale from a brand that I wanted anyway, for over half off. Hesitating because it's winter and I won't be able to wear either for 4-6 months, but I think I should do it rather than pay full price in the spring.

I nabbed a $200 Chromebook - my current laptop is in dire need of replacement. As in, in was a cheap piece of crap when I bought it five years ago, and now the screen won't stop flickering and randomly going dark, and about 1/3 of the keys don't really work unless you hit them hard. Unfortunately, there's a mail strike going on right now in Canada, so I might be waiting awhile.

I also have to figure out how to run Steam on a chromebook, which apparently is a bit of a process.

Ah, I remember that thread!  Glad you were able to grab a sensible replacement.

Yeah, we got one that was already on it's BF price (best buy has their pricing available early) and made sure it was a price we didn't mind if the rewind doesn't catch anything.

Can we have a moment and just appreciate that there are $200 laptops out there not made of cardboard? Isn’t that amazing? I remember when laptops started at $1000 and were decidedly less capable than desktops. Now it is a handful of use cases that aren’t perfectly well served with a laptop. My husband can even do CAD in a windows environment on his Macbook with no issues.

It's truly amazing how far computers have come, and how cheap they've gotten.  I bought a ~$200 netbook nine years ago and it's total garbage compared to what's out there now (1.6ghz Atom, 1GB of RAM, 160GB slow af hard drive, Windows XP).  And my previous laptop to that was a lot more expensive and even more pathetic by comparison (Lifebook B2610, ~$2000 in 2002, 10" 1024x768 display, 800mhz Pentium-III-M, 256MB RAM, 40GB molasses HDD, WinXP).  Both had maybe two hours of battery life, even new.

Current laptop is a Dell XPS 13 with practically the same form factor as that old B2610 (and half the thickness) and yet has a quad-core blazing 8th gen i7, 8GB of RAM, a fast SSD, a 1080p 13" display (bezels are just gone now), and literally eight hours of battery life.  Work bought it but it was like $700.  Insane compared to even what was around just 5 years ago.

I hear you. I could buy a new one every year at these prices and not even feel it at all in my budget. I probably would have kept kicking the can down the road awhile longer and just squinting and grumbling at my old one if my boyfriend hadn't laid down the law and informed me I would be buying a new one at Black Friday, like it or not.

I'm curious to see what happens with Steam though. I'll be sad if I can't play my otome games anymore.

I'm starting to think of the stock market correction as an extended Black Friday sale. Does that count?

On the topic of computers, I've been watching tablet prices. I like to do a lot of international travel, and want to have a decent tablet for it. That's better for looking up hotels/attractions/transit than a phone is, but lighter than a laptop. I also want to get one that's fast enough to run Ableton Live 10 decently. My frugal side has me relentlessly watching the sales prices hoping to find a steal, but I haven't yet. Hopefully soon.

My daughter's b-day just happens to fall in early December see we typically get a couple presents discounted on BF. This year we are looking at the Amazon Fire HD Tablet already marked down. It will work nicely for our monthly road trips for her gymnastics meets.

In case you don't already know this a word of caution about the Amazon Fire tablets.  Not all apps are available for the fire tablets.  I can't remember what it was I was looking for but found out there are some things I can't do with my fire tablet that I could do with any other android tablet.

I was a little upset when I looked at the WalMart bf ad and saw tires on sale.  I had just bought a set of tires at WalMart a few weeks ago.

It is possible to side-load the Google Play store and get apps that aren't available from Amazon. This does not require root access (but you do have to enable developer mode).

Do note that having two app stores on the device with quite a bit of overlap can lead to a bit of confusion as to which app store is responsible for keeping a particular app up-to-date. DW has a Fire tablet with Google Play Store side-loaded and hasn't expressed much frustration over this issue though.

Got a similar deal. Last month almost bought a Canon 6D to upgrage... used on ebay for 600-700 body only. Glad I didn;t. Yesterday, Adorama had the 6d Mark II !!! body with printer kit(printer is 399 on Amazon) + grip + SD card + photopaper + something else i can't remember. For 1299 AND 450 rebate! So really it was 849$ ... I can sell the printer for about 250-300, so about 550$ for a full frame! brand new! mark 2 !!! I can probably sell my old 60D even and do the whole update without spending a single dime!

My parents spotted our electric pressure cooker and decided that they wanted one for Christmas this year. I just ordered their Instant Pot online. The model had a listed retail price of $139.99 but after the Thanksgiving weekend deal and an extra discount code, I paid $63.06 (including tax and shipping). AND I didn’t have to brave the mall. I love the Internet.

My wife and I have needed new winter boots and laptops for years but put it off until this year. Ebates is offering 12% back at Dell Outlets, with additional coupons for 18% off Latitudes and 17% off Inspirons, so we went the scratch and dent route and replaced two laptops for a total of less than $400. The boots were 25% off at L.L. Bean, plus 4% back via Ebates and 2% back through our Fidelity Visa. There were probably higher rebates elsewhere that we overlooked.

I got some clothes for my DH and a gift for my mom from Kohl's and some Legos for the nephews from Amazon. These were at decent sale prices. I had to reset my password on both sites since it had been so long since I had shopped. Forgot to use Ebates though :-(

I've waited 6 months for Black Friday to replace my 7yo POS laptop.  I scored the Chromebook I've wanted for 25% off.  I lucked into a deal this morning.  I had an appointment this morning to get new tires for my car.  It wound up being $100 less than they quoted me last week because of a new sale.  $320 for four decent tires isn't too shabby.

I was able to get a good deal on new soccer shin guards for the kids, and took advantage of ebates double cash back today. Additionally, our grocery store had a $5 off a $15 purchase, so I bought our baking supplies + risotto rice that I was out of. Finally, picked up Uber & Home Depot gift cards with a reward (Rite Aid). Both of which will be used in the next month or so.

I am currently using my ASUS Chromebook that I bought over 3.5 years ago that I used constantly until last year, and even now occasionally.   It cost be $250 at the time.   The only thing wrong is that the touchpad is a bit less sensitive.  Chromebooks are awesome.

Never tried STEAM, lots of programs don't run on a chromebook, but I don't mind.  We have an old desktop for Excel and STEAM and video games.

You might be able to take your receipt in to show you bought the identical tires that were on sale and possibly they will do an adjustment and refund you the difference. Doesn't hurt to try!

I got 30% off some pants online. If they fit, I'll have the bottom half of my work "uniform" pretty well taken care of. Unless I gain too much weight during this holiday season :(

Unfortunately, Walmart's price match guarantee even specifically excludes black friday and cyber monday promotions =( So you can try, but I'm not sure they would!

My favorite Columbia women’s travel pants were on sale in my size only on amazon. 2 pairs of black pants $30. I bought the last two.

Same deal with my beloved Reef flip-flops a staple here in SoCal. Normally $25 each. Bought the last three pairs in my size for $7 each they’ll last for a long long time.

Black Friday this year was a good reminder that we don't need any of this crap.

I don't know why I paid more attention to it this year, but I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a single thing that I was tempted to buy.

I blew some cash.

I bought a big external HD to backup everything.  I have a NAS, but didn't have an actual backup of anything.  I figured it was a smart thing to do.  I would have hated to lose a ton of pictures, music, and video.  Admittedly, the HD is not much of a fun purchase... although the sale was decent.

I also bought a pricey small EDC flashlight ($30) and some odds and ends (short tubes, batteries, cheap bike mounts  etc.).  Totally un-necessary stuff, but I enjoy playing around with them and do a reasonable amount of night riding.

Lastly, I bought a new (home) subwoofer.  My old one (only 8 years old) died and I really did try to fix it...bought some thru hole electronic components, soldered them in, but...nope still issues.  No replacement amps or substitute ones were available to buy either.  I did salvage what I could and will see if I can craigslist or ebay those parts.  The replacement sub was pretty cheap and possibly a price mistake.  It has shipped from Amazon, and is to arrive tomorrow.  After I bought it, the posted price went up 4X.  Yes, four fold.  Weird.  Used versions cost 25% - 100% more on ebay than what I paid.  I hope it sounds as good as the deal I think I scored.

On a cash positive note, I sold a few things on craigslist that had been sitting around which made my money blowing a little less egregious.

Eddie Bauer was doing 50% off site-wide, so I grabbed some polarfleece lined softshell pants.  Looking forward to having warmer legs this winter walking the dog and working with the horses after dark in the cold.

Oh, and I grabbed an extra bag of horse supplements I would have bought anyway for 15% off.

I wanted to buy a new phone and get as much functionality as possible for my budget. Bought a phone that fitted my requirements for 40% discount. The phone was only on sale for a couple of days.

We also bought a new replacement tent that we had in mind the whole year. On Black Friday it had the lowest price in the last 2 years.

Bought new appliances for the kitchen.  It was more of a two-week sale than just Black Friday.  DW has finally broken my resolve and we're updating the kitchen, starting with the appliances.

Also purchased a new Google Pixel 3 a few days after BF with the 100% off (ok, 100% in gift cards) one day sale on Google Fi.  I previously only had my work phone, but decided to grab this deal as an eye toward needing a phone when going FI in the next few years.  It will cost me $80 + tax in Google Fi service before I can drop it and go back to no cell service (keeping my number active on Google Voice).

I hope you are going to use the phone right now. Buying a phone a few years in advance is not a good investment, because phone prices drops significantly all the time.

I'm using it currently.  However, I'm not going to use it much in four months, until about two years from now.  I agree in general that a phone, or any piece of electronics, is not a good investment in the sense you're speaking; however, I can pretty much guarantee that this phone will be worth more than $80 in two years, and am reasonably confident that it'll be better than other phones that I could purchase for that amount in two years.  I've used every smartphone I've ever owned longer than that, and this is the first time I've had a phone that was top-of-the-line when purchased since the iPhone 4 (2010).

If I really wanted to maximize my profit, I could probably hawk it on ebay or elsewhere in four months.

Snagged two pairs of short for DH as back-ups for a pair he really loves (original pair was $70, on clearance for about $30).

Same brand, same model, same colour.  Even including $10 of shipping, the total for both pairs was $52.  Sale price per pair was 39.99, less another 40%, then another 25% off that.

I bought a Samsung Odyssey+ VR headset for $300.  My computer wouldn't run it well and I didn't feel like investing more into it so I sold it on eBay for a slight profit.
