So proud of you two!!

I was stunned by some of the comments.  I guess Canada has its share of militant know-nothings just like the US.  :-)

For context, Vancouver has a small but very vocal "social justice/anti-poverty" movement whose existence depends on people handling money in an anti-mustachian way - literally every publication, pamphlet, march, or speech these guys do centers around how it's impossible to get by in Vancouver below a certain income, minimum wage needs to be $20/hr, etc etc. The second people start living badass-style, these groups lose all relevance - so anytime something like this article gets published, they essentially have to come up with arguments of why this stuff is impossible, no matter how far fetched, to justify their continued existence/support/funding.

We tend to clash with this group a lot on completely unrelated stuff due to some pretty different ideologies as a whole, so we're very used to their style of reasoning - it's pretty distinct.

Great article and well done to both of you! Yes, the comments were awful, rude and many of them clueless.  Loved the one guy's comment about how banks love people who can't understand compound interest! But you guys should be proud of yourselves and ignore the clueless morons!

Wow,

My wife and I visited Vancouver back in September and we loved it. We rented bikes and rode around Stanley. So beautiful. We have entertained the thought of moving there, but the high cost of living was something we heard frequently. Apparently, it is possible to live there Mustachian style! But we have a dog, and do want to have kids, so that would complicate things a bit I think. But very well done indeed. Enjoy that city!

If you do, consider co-op housing - a lot of co-ops are specifically for families, and have big outdoor courtyards and gardens (secure from outsiders) with playground equipment and stuff. Also, I wouldn't say for 100% but any co-op I've ever heard of has been pet friendly to an extent (typically one per unit, large dogs allowed).

How is everyone seeing comments?  I don't see any comments on the article...
Right under the bi-line is a link for comments along with fb recommend, tweet and pin it.

Yeah, I see that, and it says "0".  If I click it, it takes me to the bottom of the article: http://www.theprovince.com/business/Young+living+cheaply+Vancouver+bring+Freedom/9692666/story.html#Comments

EDIT: Not showing in Chrome or IE. Weird.  Wonder if my work connection is blocking it somehow.  Usually just a page doesn't load though (will get Access Denied), it doesn't block specific elements...

Comments are hosted by Facebook, so it could be a work block on that domain or maybe you have taken measures to excise Facebook from your browsing experience.

Congrats to you! Though I'm not sure I'd be ready to lose my anonymity in such a splashy manner. ;)

My wife and I are fellow Vancouverites who are living quite nicely on less than 2k/month. Now, our lives are quite different - we are denizens of the suburbs and we own our home. We are in our early 40's and are firmly FI, even though we are both still working... but not for long!

Thanks! I see quite a few mustachian-types posting in support, but also a lot of idiots. Nobody seems to understand what a co-op is, even after having it explained several times by several people... arrgh.

Well, this is nice - boyfriend wrote in a letter to the paper addressing the biggest complainypants issues people have, and it got published! http://blogs.theprovince.com/2014/04/08/letters-public-education-school-funding-bctf-teachers-frugal-couple-cpp/
