Water use
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:29:41 AM »
Not sure if this is Badassity or not, but here goes:

We got our water bill last week, and it reminded me to check if we are using a reasonable amount of water.

It's a bi-monthly bill; two people in the house. We used 9.3 m3. Which works out to about 75l per person per day (about 20 US gallons).

I checked in a couple of places including http://www.data360.org/dsg.aspx?data_set_group_id=757 - I am assuming this chart does *not* include water for agriculture and so on. Here says http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/qa-home-percapita.html 80-100 gallons per day.

So yeah, pretty happy with that! Obviously living in an RV would use less. Hmm. 75l = 75kg which is roughly my weight. Still a lot of water really...

I'd say that's pretty good! In a two month period where my wife and I were consciously  trying to use less water, we used 12.5 gallons per person per day. But that was with me taking some showers each week at work.

After living in a van for part of the summer I'm downright embarrassed by how much water we use in a normal lifestyle. Vandwelling was maybe 2 gallons of directly accountable consumption per person per day, but that's because it doesn't count stopping to use the bathroom at rest stops or something. Still, if I'm in the backcountry I use 1 gallon per day MAX, and can do so for up to about a week at a time.

After that experience I take showers every other day now. I've also grown to believe that water consumption person-to-person is hard to compare because different people count different things towards their consumption. For instance, I'm in an apartment now with shared washers and dryers so I don't/can't count the water used by the washing machine in my totals. This is just like living on the road and not counting the water consumed from the rest stop.

yes...i'm guilty of LONG hot showers at the gym. sigh. but i think some of my recent improvements (low flow faucet aerators and shower heads at home) have helped our water bill. it went from 125 to 45, but we also watered the garden quite a bit last month, so i'm sure that is some of the difference. i'm trying to get the kids on board with if its yellow let it mellow. we shall see.
