Unloading DVDs for pay
« on: June 21, 2016, 09:04:16 AM »
Well not much pay I grant you but I intend to clear space using an app called Decluttr.  I don't expect to make a fortune my main objective is to get rid of all the DVDs and PS2 games we no longer play or watch.  So far out of the four DVDs I entered it took 3 for a grand total of $1.64.  Next is to see if we have any old electronics to offload from my son's room.

I unloaded almost all my CDs a while back, but I just took them to Half Price Books. I got like $40 for about 80 CDs. Not too bad actually.

I did this too (Half Price Books).  Took a bunch of CDs/DVDs/BDs/games about a year ago and I think I got $100 for them.  Probably about half of what I could have netted selling them online individually after overhead (shipping, packing materials, etc) , but it would have probably taken an outrageous amount of time to do so.  I did hand-pick out some that I knew were particularly valuable (worth $25+ each) to sell on my own.

Exact same here, except I went to a Tennessee-based place called McKay's (lived there at the time). Every CD but one, the vast majority of my DVDs, and a small mountain of books. Got something like $200 cash in exchange. A little depressing in light of the minor fortune I dropped on all of it over the years... but hey, cash is cash, and I'm no longer cluttered. Lesson learned.

And for the record, I would have gotten rid of that last CD too, but it's been jammed in my car CD player for ~7 years and I just can't get it out, no matter how hard I try.

Sidenote, we've now gone from:

OP's $1.64
to LibrarIan's $40
to Ketchup's $100
to my $200

...who's next in this game of one-upmanship?

I've never kept track over the years of the books, cd's and DVD's that I've sold or traded so I can't play the game.

But it was a revelation some years back when I realized that you don't have to keep these things forever. And if you ever really miss one that you sold, you can always hit the library, the internet or if truly desperate, buy it again.  I can't think of anything I sold that I missed that much...

Yes, some people call that "cloud storage".

A few years ago I sold off some CDs I no longer wanted. Not for very much after postage and fees. More recently I have donated CDs and DVDs to charity, not worth the time to list and sell, the postage cost will be higher than the value of the item. Fortunately I never built up a DVD collection beyond a handful of titles, and the majority of the CDs I bought I still want. The small number of PC games I bought I sold after finishing with them.

At present I am just thrilled to be making space finally.  I am going to donate some of my Barbies that aren't worth anything to a thrift shop so some child can play with them.  I have needed for years to get rid of them my son is working so he can't always take things for me now I can do it myself without bugging him to help me.

Oh man!! I used to live in Chattanooga and I miss McKay's so much. We used to go every Saturday, and check for things priced too cheap and resell them on Ebay (this didn't happen often). Also used to get gas money by offering to take other people's clutter in for them.

The McKays near my cousin is where I commit most of my used book sins.  But to balance out the used cookbook spree I am now getting rid of DVDs at a fast clip.  I encountered some flack from the DH who claimed I was "getting rid of history".  I have emptied almost all of a basket and some of a pile underneath a couch.  I do like bringing them to work scanning them with my phone and putting them into a box then dropping them into the UPS box.

Getting rid of history? I didn't know that purging a DVD from your collection meant it was never able to be viewed again... SHIT! Are you saying that I erased certain movies from the fabric of space and time?

Everybody, it's my fault that The Godfather and Star Wars don't exist anymore. I'm so, so sorry. I'm a monster.

Poor market timing here. You should have unloaded them 8 or 9 years ago like we did, when people still actually wanted DVD's.

I have never been good at market timing unfortunately the only market timing talent I seem to have is holding onto some of my collectible Barbies.  But history or not those DVDs are out of here. And I don't miss them at all.  Now onto the old PC games taking up space and some of the too many books I have acquired.

Donate them to goodwill and take a nice tax break. Shazam! Zero effort and financial payoff.

That's my plan for the Barbies that are worthless(Shhh I don't want them to know they're being disposed of)....and the other oddball dolls I own I don't know why I bought them..

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
