Unforeseen benifets of biking
« on: September 20, 2012, 03:42:11 PM »
I've been biking to work nearly every day this month. There are plenty of reasons for this, but it just seemed like time.

All week i have had super memory. It's crazy. I'm usually kind of flaky, if it's not on my calendar it doesn't happen. This is especially true and work and i struggle with last minute popups, as they often don't make it into the calendar. This week, i made and covered for no less then 3 calendar mistakes.\

I've also noticed my reflexes are fucking ninja-like. It feels like the few things i've dropped get captured before breaking or getting to the ground. Most notably, while chopping veggies for dinner the knife slipped and was caught using one finger against the center pushing it against the counter, While it wobbled it's self to center i thought, "holy fuck grabbing this knife was a stupid thing to try to do...Oh wait, i'm not bleeding. WIN!"

Do you try to catch a falling soldering iron?

Dude, just let it fall!  Get your toes out of the way,  though!

Aside from the knife-catching (I don't need to catch knives to hurt myself, I can do it in so many other ways), yes, I get what you mean about the cycling. When I ride, especially longer distances and especially in traffic, I'm totally high-focus and high-energy for a while afterward. I'm not sure I would qualify that as an entirely good thing, though.

This is a good reminder for me to stay on top of eating well and getting in some daily exercise. I noticed during college that my piano studies became easier when I was working out regularly (I got a free personal trainer through the Phys Ed majors program, woo!). Now that I have much less time at the piano, I have to be sharp, clear, AND efficient. Oh boy!

Gerard, I think an exercise high can be good as long as it's not an agitated feeling. When I do something that either gives my brain or my body a bit of a workout, I'm less inclined to rot away on the couch and much more likely to do something constructive. :)

This is kind of a related note about your increased reflexes, but something I've noticed.  Whenever I go on a camping trip, it is typically the least active members of the group that get hurt the most doing the "safest" activities.

For example, me and my dad used to be the ones to find the mountains nearby and find a way to scramble to the top, or go mountain biking down a steep trail.  Yet, it was the person that stayed around the campground reading that ended up falling into the picnic table and having go visit the hospital.

I think that the kind of reflexes you get from using your body often and in a variety ways, prevent this from happening to the more active folks.  It also allows you to catch knives in mid air without bleeding!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
