Unearthed an excellent use of time in starting a book club
« on: July 27, 2022, 10:26:28 AM »
I feel like the simplest tangible form of Mustachianism is living frugally and taking control of personal finance, but the core facet of MMM comes down to valuing time. Just sharing a little experience on the latter.

Last year I texted a group of close friends I only see once or twice per year. Everyone had moved far away in recent years. I asked if they wanted to suggest, independently read, then discuss books virtually over Zoom. Definitely not the same as meeting in person, but it works well enough. There are 5 of us.

We meet once every other week and have finished 8 books since starting last year. We started off with shorter books to keep it achievable and lower commitment. Each meeting is 1-1.5 hours long. Depending on the length of the book, we decide on splitting up the book into portions for discussion. This tends to be 1-3 meetings per book.

The basic book selection process looks like this:
1. Each person brings a few book suggestions beforehand and puts them down on a Google Sheet.
2. Each person briefly introduces their suggestions to give the other people an idea what the books are about and if they sound interesting.
3. Each person makes a final nomination from the suggested pool.
4. A final poll is taken where everyone ranks the nominations.
5. We use the local library, secondhand bookstore, or used copies on Amazon to get the books.

This can be done with family, friends, or coworkers. As a side benefit, I've also been reading more books than I've had in years (even beyond book club). It's been helpful for staying connected with friends in the post-pandemic world and has become an increasingly valuable use of time.

Great post! I joined a book group about a decade ago just as it was starting. We have 8 members and meet monthly. The timing is such that it's not a food event, just tea and maybe some cookies and fruit around 7 PM. We mostly read contemporary fiction from a wide range of authors. No hardback new hard-to-find books. Sometimes we do a nonfiction to mix it up, and every year some kind of classic, say Jane Austen or William Faulkner that is a re-read for some and new to others. We rotate homes and during Covid did Zoom which was very sanity inducing during that challenging time. Like you, we try to source books that are accessible via our great local library system, used bookstores, and some do Kindle and Audible. Most of us like to kick it old-school with actual books.

Once a year, in early summer we do have a party with everyone tossing in a couple ideas. That event is a potluck and wine for those who want it. We vote on books for the upcoming year - we meet September through June. The first book of the season is a longer book we can read through the summer months. We come up with some good stuff! My book group is one of my favorite things. I love the discussion, most especially all the different points of view.

I have a book club where we “meet” using Marco Polo. It’s a free app that lets you send video messages. So there’s no schedule. You just listen or record whenever you want. Some people chat daily, some pop on once a week. We avoid book spoilers until everyone is done but might start talking about the early parts of the book sooner. Or talking about it generically in a way that wouldn’t wreck it for anyone. We also talk a lot about other books we’re reading or generic life stuff. I love it.

We take turns with the book selection. Whoever has that month puts out 2 or 3 options, then people vote.

The local people meet in person occasionally but rarely talk about books when we do. :)

I joined an online niche book club (art books) with people from all over the world.  We meet weekly September to May and take the summer off.  we still meet sporadically over the summer, but for social instead of reading a book together.

If you have a hobby that has great books published about it, an online book club of like minded people could be a great option.

My daughter is in a zoom book club with her husband's family (siblings and spouses). They take turns choosing the books, and it has to be a book that was important/formative to them in childhood. They are having a great time.
