I feel like the simplest tangible form of Mustachianism is living frugally and taking control of personal finance, but the core facet of MMM comes down to valuing time. Just sharing a little experience on the latter.
Last year I texted a group of close friends I only see once or twice per year. Everyone had moved far away in recent years. I asked if they wanted to suggest, independently read, then discuss books virtually over Zoom. Definitely not the same as meeting in person, but it works well enough. There are 5 of us.
We meet once every other week and have finished 8 books since starting last year. We started off with shorter books to keep it achievable and lower commitment. Each meeting is 1-1.5 hours long. Depending on the length of the book, we decide on splitting up the book into portions for discussion. This tends to be 1-3 meetings per book.
The basic book selection process looks like this:
1. Each person brings a few book suggestions beforehand and puts them down on a Google Sheet.
2. Each person briefly introduces their suggestions to give the other people an idea what the books are about and if they sound interesting.
3. Each person makes a final nomination from the suggested pool.
4. A final poll is taken where everyone ranks the nominations.
5. We use the local library, secondhand bookstore, or used copies on Amazon to get the books.
This can be done with family, friends, or coworkers. As a side benefit, I've also been reading more books than I've had in years (even beyond book club). It's been helpful for staying connected with friends in the post-pandemic world and has become an increasingly valuable use of time.
