Tried to quit part time job and got an 80% raise!
« on: May 21, 2021, 11:30:10 AM »
The mustachian power is real! When you are in the position of power anything is possible. I was tired of driving to my part time job (~2 hr round trip) to only work 5 hours per week. The value just wasn't adding up for my life energy. I told the director that I would be quitting at the end of June. He did not like to hear that since I have developed a quality relationship with the site and have significantly improved their numbers. So he asked me what it would take to get me to stay. I told him I am willing to listen but it has to make me want to get out of bed.

He definitely surprised me! He offered me an 80% increase in pay with the same hours. I went from $50 an hour to $90 an hour by making myself valuable and making it clear that I will walk without attractive terms.

On the flip side, it is quite alarming that companies have so much wiggle room with pay negotiations. Or for that matter, the fact that a company will always try to maximize their profits by recognizing that most people HAVE to work so they will not push back on their pay rate.

Needlessly to say, I am not quitting anymore! FI has just been accelerated.

As David Goggins would say --> stay hard.

Holy crap! Well played! Though I agree that there's an edge of "wait, you could have been paying me X this whole time?" Your bargaining power's never higher than when you are actually willing to walk away.

Congrats! That's an awesome increase.  As much confidence as you had approaching the job, I assumed you were FI already.  Is this a second job?  If so, it one you want to keep once you are FI?  There are a lot of good incentives for keeping some earned income.

Yep, this is a second(or third job). My primary job is more than enough for me so I simply played my cards and let them decide if they wanted to keep me. At this rate, I should reach FI in about 3 years at age 34. The more I focus on FI the faster it seems to become a reality. I doubt I would keep this job after FI because I will not be living in the same area or desire to drive 2 hours round trip for work.

That's pretty entertaining. Your commute is murder, though. Are you sure you want to keep it even at the higher rate?

Eh, if you count the commute time as "work" - If I'm reading the details correctly it's still $64/hr (5 hour workday, 2 hour commute).

I don't have any direct experience with this, but based on the experiences of my friends, if you are working on a part-time basis and/or consultant there seems to be more flexibility with negotiations, especially if they are not providing health insurance benefits. When you are full-time salary, organizations seem to be pretty firm on the structure of salaries based on organizational hierarchy.

Yep, this.  Way easier for a company to justify a one-off increase for someone in a non-permanent position because the regular employees can’t really compare themselves in the same way
