Today was my last day on the job - I quit!
« on: January 31, 2020, 07:30:58 PM »
I finally decided to take the plunge and leave my job. It wasn't a particularly bad job, but I felt I was losing a little bit of my soul every day. And I finally decided enough was enough, it's time for a change.

I'm not quite to my FIRE stache goal yet (I'm about 12% short), but I figure I'll take some time completely for myself and then see how I feel. I could maybe swing being FIRE'd with my current assets, but will probably end up with another (lower paying, less stressful) job in the future, more for fun than anything else.

I've never been that active of a poster here, but I feel an immense amount of pride looking back on my first forum post circa 2014, when I had just started my stache, knowing that I stuck with it and have basically made it through. I saved hard and found out that life is much better without running on the never ending hedonic treadmill of facepunches.

Feeling all kinds of emotions right now, but more than anything I'm feeling FREE. Like the last day of grade school before a long summer. Happy friday, yall

PS: Big thanks to MMM and everyone who contributes to the forum. Without all of you I'd probably be 'an average consumer' with no savings and a huge car loan. Definitely have changed my life in a big way and I'll be forever appreciative of that!

Congrats SEdude (is that South East or Single-Ended? haha...doesn't matter)!

I love these threads!  While I'm not quite within 12%, the closer I get the more I realize I don't need "this" job any longer...and have already started an internal corp. downshift.

That’s great news! You’ll do fine. As an acquaintance once said to me: “so what’s keeping you here, other than fungus?”

You’re striking an important blow for yourself and those who follow you.

(These forums are the only place I’ve been where we congratulate each other on quitting our jobs. It’s like waking up within an Ayn Rand novel in a way. )

Soooo ... you've been on here since 2014 and you have a grand total of 12 posts?

I think you win the Grand Prize in either the "Lurker Supreme" or "Most Terse" category!

In any case, congrats!!

Did you have health insurance or other benefits, and can you share what you're doing to replace those?

What are your plans (or lack thereof)?

I should put "6 years experience lurking MMM forums" on my resume lol

I had health insurance through my job (and vision/dental), but opted not to take COBRA (it would have been really expensive). Instead I've replaced it with an insurance plan from the ACA marketplace for my state, which is definitely worse insurance than I had before, but it is really affordable (~$50/mo after the income-based subsidy, depending on how much money I make this year). I also decided not to get any vision or dental insurance, and just pay for those out of pocket as needed.

As far as plans go... well I'm not sure yet. For the moment I'm trying to slow down life a bit and stop myself from always being in "productive work mode". It's weird having to teach myself that it's ok to just spend a few hours biking around town for fun.

Get a job at Fedex, @SEdude. You`ll be easily hired, part-time by default, supplement that missing 12% of your FIRE goal, and get great insurance benefits for a part-time job! I know a guy who is FIRE`d that still works there just to have something to do and the benefits. He only works 20 hours per week.

How part-time can this be? Do you need to commit to some sort of schedule?

Or apply to work for the upcoming Census.

Yeah, but the schedule is around a 4-5 hour shift.
