Three years without a drop
« on: February 27, 2023, 02:23:41 PM »
Just that, it's been 3 years since my last drink! I've long since given up trying to keep track of how much money I've saved in just alcohol costs, this doesn't factor in any loss of productivity or late night eating because I was returning from the bars.

High fives! I'm coming up on six years and it's honestly such a relief.

Congratulations!  That's quite an accomplishment!  My BF quit like 7 years ago; he's more pleasant to be around now :)

Congrats!

Same here, 3 years this past Jan 1. Year 3 was awesome, years 1&2 felt like I was an ex-drinker who had quit alcohol. Year 3 just felt like I was a non-drinker, like it's a non issue that I don't even think about.

Well done!! I'm coming up on 6 years this June.

Congratulations, proud of you! Alcohol really adds up. Easily $50-75/wk once you add in tips at bars / restaurants. $2600-$3900 not to mention all the health problems that come with it like high blood pressure and diabetes. I know a few people who have had DUIs on their record. Even if you get it off your record that's thousands of dollars in attorney's fees. One friend paid $10k to a lawyer to get a DUI off his record on a below 32° night. He had the engine running but was napping in the backseat, still was charged and arrested.

That's awesome, congrats! I used to drink 2-4 beers daily. I stopped doing that and only drinking a couple on social occasions (which is rare since I'm a homebody). My triglycerides went from an extremely high 660 (supposed to be under 150) to 100, and to date I'm down 25 pounds. I've been working out and building muscle, too. I feel so much better on a daily basis, and I'm saving a ton of money! For anyone on the fence, give it a shot for a month - you'll never want to go back!

That's incredible! Yeah I have meetings at bars and it feels like a superpower because I recall everything and am not worried about making a stupid ass comment. I don't have to wake up dreading looking at my phone to see if I texted someone I shouldn't have.

My weight oddly hasn't changed at all even though I am exercising more and eating better but oh well. I feel loads healthier, plus I am spending way less money whenever i go out.

Oh, I so relate to this.

I never drank a lot, but that kept me a lightweight, so at any event where I drank more than 3 drinks, I was fucked. I can't tell you how many times I woke up after events panicked with "oh god, what did I say last night?"

I don't have the best filter at the best of times, so...yeah...I'm very happy to never have that anymore.

I drank almost no alcohol until I was 30 and feel it's still paying dividends.

Unexpected Mitch Hedberg reference!

@MgoSam that's pretty rad! Great benefits on body and bank account. In the past, IIRC, you mentioned boxing workouts; you're probably fitter and faster now.

I somehow missed this thread. I'm a long term non-drinker and don't really remember when or why I stopped (which is probably WHY I stopped ;-)) but am definitely healthier and happier for it. Wealthier too. I'm of the "my body is a temple blah blah blah" school of thought and as an athlete even a small amount of alcohol seems toxic to me now. Good for you @MgoSam  and welcome to the club!

The downside is that I'm ALWAYS the designated driver. Of course I went carefree more then 3 years ago and no one wants to ride on my bike with me  ;-). As a funny side note my step sister once got a DUI while driving a golf cart.

Haha. People around here who get their licenses revoked because of DUI drive around on scooters, mopeds, golf carts, etc hopefully not drunk though. I feel you on the designated driver thing. I quit ten or so years ago and don't miss it at all.

Yeah I take some meetings at a bar and it is amazing how great it is to be clear headed and catch and remember everything intoxicated customers and vendors tell me.

It’s much easier to keep weight off by not drinking between the calories and loss of willpower to not eat too much. Also my blood work and blood pressure is so much better.

Nice. Yeah bars are rip off too. I get a 24 pack of nordeast for about $24 and will last good chunk of summer. I can't imagine what people spend at breweries 🤯

And congrats OP!

I drank in my 20s, then married a teetotaler from 27-40 so didn't drink much then. Drinking picked up a bit in my 40s after divorcing teetotaler, but then down to almost nothing in my 50s because I don't like the way I feel the next day after a couple drinks. Not to mention that I'm way too "fun" (or "annoying" if you ask DH) after 3 drinks.

Lol, I'm a pretty radically uninhibited person as it is, so it's not like alcohol loosens me up. I'm actually more fun sober. If anything, alcohol makes me a bit morose.
