The Weekend's Mustachery
« on: July 07, 2013, 04:03:15 PM »
Its been a mustachian weekend for sure!

1) I found an broken picnic table, added some screws, bolts and some left over paint to put a table in the backyard that I'd been thinking I was going to spend some cash on.

2) Our Subaru's blinker was only working occasionally for the past few months, mechanic said it would cost 150 for a full diagnostic and then who knows for the repair. I finally found a decent response through googling and spent 30 minutes disassembling the steering column/blinker unit and cleaned/fixed it up, the blinker works like new!

3) Cleaned out the garage and organized everything - was relentless in giving away anything we'd be storing but not using for years. Now the space is super functional - mainly for storing/working on bikes and tools. Hopefully with it organized like this I won't make the mistake of buying a second of anything I already own.

4) We'd needed a shade in the backyard for the kiddos' play area, had been looking for cheap ones but last second found one just a mile from my house that was the industrial version being sold for 10 percent of the retail!
Feeling the glow that successful DIY project going well, happy Sunday!

wow! That's some serious productivity toward Mustachian ends!  And what a great thread to start!  I had a pretty wicked weekend too!

1. Rode my bike to work for the first time ever! Now today wasn't a work day, mind you. But it was my maiden voyage to ensure bike was ok, and body was ok, and to time it. 18 minutes. Discovered bike has a dragging brake pad (so body is not so ok now as the ride was harder than it should have been). Started reading how to fix the bike. Tried, tried, not working, went to bed frustrated.

2. Woke pissed off that I hadn't been able to conquer the bike brakes. Tried again...fixed em enough to do the ride to work again.  Much easier for the first half.  Still needs adjusting but I'm figuring it out!

3. Engineered cool very inexpensive way to get hardware mounted so my daughter can hang a curtain across her closet. Very satisfying!

4. Did large batch cooking and baking to get some meals and treats into the pipeline.

5. Tuned up the family laptop to run faster and hopefully make the fan stop running and the unit stop overheating. Definitely runs faster, but fan and heat still a problem. More research to do.

there's more but suffice it to say, I'm feeling very happy tonight.

thank you for starting this post!

thanks shadow, yes, it has been on the periphery of my mind. But I am stubborn and believe I ought to be able to solve it instead of just managing it. We'll see.

I have a Dell with a fan as well and I haven't found a way around it.  I upgraded my video card when I bought it (used to play World of Warcraft way back when) and it just plain produces a lot of heat, and heat MUST be dispersed from a computer.  So I think your options are either a cooling pad or live with it.  I've chosen to live with it.  The next laptop will definitely not have a fan.

Our household had a pretty Mustachian weekend as well!!!

1. I cut grant's hair for the first time ever!

2. We made (delicious) homemade blizzards instead of going to DQ

3. russ, grant and I ran our errands on our bicycles

4. I taught myself how to hem "new" pants with cuffs bought at the thrift store

5. I made our second batch of homemade Laundry detergent

cool thread! these have all been very mustachian wins.

1. I also did some batch cooking, and processed some veggies for quicker cooking later. Planned out uses for the csa veggies. I made 6 cups of pesto to put in the freezer

2. made all my own dinner fixin's for july 4th. my brother came over and I made some bread (artisan bread in 5 min a day) that we ate with dip and with bruschetta for appetizers.

3. ordered some new RAM for my computer, which I had to get for an OS upgrade. Anyway, researched, found the RAM for a great price, and today I installed it after watching a youtube instructional video! :)

4. only running the a/c while we sleep

5. free park district swimming pool visits and free public beach visits

3 mustachian college kids living together? That is awesome. Must be good to have that sort of support in the household, especially at that age. You guys can all keep each other accountable for making good choices and forming the right habits. Badass!

I wish I had that kind of head start. I was not so frugal in college, haha.
