Saved $300 on work phone number
« on: January 08, 2020, 02:32:54 PM »
Hubs had ring central for an 800 number to his side business and they recently sent out notice that rates were going up to around $300 per year for his line. The number gets almost no use, as most contact is via emails, so we found a better (free option). Got a free Google voice phone number (not 800 but many people have free nationwide calling) and it rings forward to his personal cell. It has its own voicemail box with message and he was able to make the number a new contact and give it a distinct ring tone. With ring central it was supposed to use a different tone, but he never got that working properly, it was hard to know if he should answer professionally or with a "Hi." While this option won't work for bigger businesses, for many small operations, this might be a nice solution vs. using your personal number.

I have a Google Voice # and I've had some people tell me they've tried to call it and it doesn't go through.  Has anyone else had similar issues?   Other than those few instances, works great.

Just so you're aware @moneypitfeeder, if it's not too late, sometimes it can hurt business to lose a long-established phone number. With that in mind, if the old 800# account is still active for a bit longer, you can port the number out to VOIP.ms and keep it for peanuts without the privacy compromises of dealing with Google. They charge $0.99/month plus 1.9¢/minute for incoming calls, and you can always forward those calls accordingly to another phone for an extra penny a minute like GV does, as well, or do free call termination through a SIP client.

@Fishing4FI, we haven't had any problems with it so far, but also haven't tested it much.

@Daley we already killed the RC number, luckily for us he's only had that number for about 2 years, it's not on his business cards, and over those 2 years he's maybe only gotten 3-4 calls on it. I don't think it affect his business, most people email him, it's for very specialized camera equipment that he manufactures per customer set-up. But it's good info to know, in case we decide an 800 is the way to go again, we hadn't heard of VIOP.ms, those rates are great! We could always get a new 800 for a month and then, as you said, port it over.

I had google voice as my primary number for close to 10 years and never experienced this.

Must have been a fluke thing.  Thanks for the feedback
