The Best Way To Stop Spending Money In The World

Don't buy shit you don't need...

Stay with me on this one. I know you hear it all the time, but seriously, stop buying shit. If you are at home right now as you read this, look up from you computer and look at all the shit in your house that you already have...do you really need more shit?

Look at your book shelf (if you are like me) you have 100 books on that shelf that you haven't read...and yet you want to buy a new book?

Go to netflix...there are literally thousands of movies on there that you haven't seen...and yet you want to buy a new movie?

Go to your closet... there are outfits in there that you haven't wore in so long that if someone saw you wearing it they would think you just bought it...yet you want to buy more clothes?

Stop buying shit.

I know there are some who are reading this who are going to want to comment "I don't buy shit, you shut up and don't tell me what to do..." and if that is you, then I am so happy that you don't buy shit....this post isn't meant for you. This post is meant for those guys who are new to this journey...those guys who love finding little gems on pinterest like "How to reuse plastic bottle to make (insert literally everything in the world here)." It doesn't matter if you save $100 a year by making your own laundry detergent, if you keep buying shit you don't need.

Look I love being frugal, and every time I sit down and eat a bowl of beans and rice a tear still comes to my eye. However, if there was one thing I could go back and do...it would be tell myself years ago to stop buying shit.

So here is my challenge to you. Go to your special place that you keep cash and get a $10 bill to keep in your wallet. Love and cherish that $10 bill. Draw a little mustache on Mr Hamilton if you want (I know it's illegal, but you are a fucking rebel.). Put that $10 in your wallet and name it. Take it out on a picnic or to the park or something and get to know it better. Meet it's parents, and go to the courthouse and have a little wedding for it. BUT DO NOT SPEND IT. Go to the store and stand in front of the thing you want a whole bunch, and pull out your new found love...and ask yourself, is this worth getting rid of Mr Hamilton? Hold on to and cherish Mr Hamilton as long as you possibly can, but next time you spend money, it has to be Mr Hamilton.

I've been holding on to a Mr. Jackson for a couple of weeks now. Every time I go into Gamestop, or I'm feeling a hankering for a late-night milkshake....I look at Mr Jackson, and I think of all the good times we have had together. Then I don't buy shit I don't need.

This rant is brought to you buy: In Cheap We Trust by Lauren Weber, which brought me to the reality that few Frugal people practice what they preach.

That's all well and good, but my problem is that I can't stop making shit.

I go to the store and buy groceries, toothpaste, chewing gum, etc. etc. schlepp it all home and scarf it all down and inside 30 hours, sometimes way less, here it all comes back in the form of.... you guessed it: SHIT.

I even have a special appliance, with accessories and ongoing recurrent payments to keep the appliance working, just to get rid of all the shit I am making.

It seems like there is no end to it and just STOPPING, as you recommend doesn't look like it would work at all.

Oh woe! whatever am I to do??

Do Not Go To Stores.
Only thing they got in there, is stuff to buy.

The Food Store is the Only Store. Get in and get out, and cling to that list.

You want interesting new objects in your life? Go to the library.

Okay, okay, okay...I hear you. (How did you know there was so much shit in my house? How did you find out I have a bunch of clothes I haven't worn in a very long time? And why are you snooping on my bookshelf, dammit?)

Gawd...I can't even explain how right you are. I officially stopped buying shit for the second time in my life last week. (The first time was when we were paying off our house.)  To be honest, I actually like having a reason NOT to buy more shit. I like that I've taken control again. I'm allowing myself $100/month for an allowance or play money, and that should be more than enough.

Now, please stop scolding me.  ;)

I agree with you. I have vastly improved in my spending over the last 5 years but I still struggle, even after so much decluttering I have done over the last 5 years.  This is an ongoing process for me.

You (OP) apparently bought NetFlix.
But you didn't technically buy it.  You have nothing for your money other than a code.  And you committed to paying for it whether you use it or not...
Buying a movie is way cheaper than going to a theater.  And you can watch it until they stop selling DVD players.  Your family and friends can watch it.  You can swap it with them for movies you don't have.  Someday you can sell it on Craigslist or a yard sale.
BTW, I don't buy movies.  And I only go to a movie theater a cpl times a year.

Extricating yourself from the clutches of consumerism is a long-term project.
Most of us were brought up in it.
But the other day I was slowly biking through town and went by a line of guzzlers at a drive through and started chuckling out loud.
On a  beautiful sunny spring day. Idling at the drive through!
Then rolled by a mall and the parking lot was packed. More involuntary laughing.

A day comes when you can see the ludicrousness of buying shit all the time, from the outside.
And it's just as funny as anything.

It's funny- I generally don't need more shit.

Except make up.

make is one the brand of "shit" that I still feel compelled to purchase.   And ultimately- I get suckered in to buying stuff- and I have MORE than plenty of make up at home.

This month is the first month I'm REALLY making a concerted effort to STOP looking at shit- stop looking at tutorials for shit- stop seeing shit- stop going to stores other than my immediate food needs- which I'm really making an effort to curtail as well.

I have a lot of shit.
And I"m getting married.
And I have a ton of debt.
I need less shit- and more discipline.
