Switched old phone to Ting
« on: January 02, 2015, 02:34:27 PM »
I was on a family share plan with a parent for many years with Sprint. I bought a Note 2 phone two years ago and the contract was finally up. Decided to switch to ting to save some money.

I moved my phone to ting by simply giving ting the sprint password and my phone meid. Once the phone was switched over (took 8 hours),I rooted my phone and installed a modified firmware (based on android 5.0.2 lollipop). I also installed a custom kernel (agni) which allows me to overclock the phone and run it at a lower voltage (among many other things).

The performance on the phone is great and is running the latest software (even newer than what is currently on the note 4). I'm guessing the monthly cost will be ~30 dollars from ~60 with sprint (not including taxes and fees which should also be lower).

I'm currently about 2/3 through my first month with Ting. Aside from being more careful with extravagent texting, my use is virtually the same as my previous unlimited plan. My bill will likely be $17, compared to $47 with Cricket. I'm very pleased so far.

I'm using google voice which allows you to receive text for free. I have google voice set to use wifi only as well and have it forwarded to my cell number.

When i'm on wifi, i make calls using google voice (i have it set to ask each time i place a call). I give my google voice number to people so it is the primary inbound.

When i'm not on wifi, i place calls using ting (lte/3g) and receive inbound calls which are forwarded to my cell from google voice.

I have been on Ting for a while now and love it.  My bill this month for three phones was $45.  Total.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
