I've been invited to speak at 4 conferences this semester.
Last Friday was Boston University. Next weekend is U of Milwakuee, then my school, then a City U of NY campus.
BU was good enough to film.
Yes, my jacket collar is flipped up, and I feel very dumb for not realizing. I'm also self-conscious about my tie being a bit short and think I'll just ditch both those items for the next event.
But I do want to share here for anyone interested.
It's a 13-minute presentation on a very small part of the life of Charles Curtis, who I'm writing a biography about.

Congrats! It's a great thing when your work gets recognized.
I am finally reaching the point in my biology research career that I am getting invited to conferences to talk about my genetically engineered microbes. Won't be sharing my video links because I very strongly value online compartmentalization and anonymity though.

If you're anonymous here, no sense in ruining that.
That's great about your research.

Very cool, congratulations! And I've learned something about Charles Curtis too, thanks.

Is this for real?

Is this for real?
It's real, and fairly unbelievable on just about all points from birth to death; mostly because as you hear about it, you think how have I never heard of this guy?
When I started writing the biography in 2019 I thought it would take a year to get through the 1st draft. I didn't know his life was basically an incredible adventure story from the time his mother died when he was 3 until he left the White House at 73. He had a father, but Curtis and his sister were the 2nd of 3 families he'd abandoned, leading Charles to take in his youngest half-sister when her mother died. This was Dolly, for whom (and I swear this is true) the phrase "hello, Dolly!" comes from when Teddy Roosevelt's daughter, Alice, said it to her during a feud the latter had started during a slow news cycle right before the Great Depression.
