Free Business Speed Internet
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:12:12 PM »
We have family that live directly across the street from us. They are too far off the road and Comcast would not give them service. They work from Home and need good internet, att was like under 760kb for them.

We get cable internet to our house, and beam it to them with a microwave dish over about 1/4 mile. They have retained about 97% of the upload and download speed that we get.

For helping them out we get free internet! Saves us about $600 a year.

I don't see it as stealing.  Is it stealing if a guest comes to your house and uses wifi while standing in the back yard?  They're using a service that has been paid for, with your permission.

Eh, I'd say it's a gray area.  It's probably against Comcast's terms of service to share your connection with another household, but they're not actually losing out since they won't sell their service to the other household.

I say good for you!

I think this has the MMM seal of approval:

I don't think it's stealing, but I almost wish it was just because fuck comcast for being such a horrible company.  If any company deserves to be stolen from it's comcast.

Sinking to the level of or below a terrible company does not put one in the right, it just makes the entire world just that much uglier. Be better than those who would just as soon screw you over than give you a fair shake, not worse.

Unless you're paying for business-level service with the rights to share a connection, this is a clear violation of terms of service, and worse, you'll be on the hook for any illegal activity they might conduct online under your account. There's no safe harbor protection if you're reselling consumer grade internet.

This isn't to say that this is a good way around the distance issue, and I'm sure it's within the realm of possibility to set up two personal accounts at your current address with some effort, one in their name... but.

Interesting, does anyone know if there are any actual regulations prohibiting this (other than Comcast terms&conditions)?  What about water, electricity, natural gas, etc., could you buy an excess and sell it to your neighbors if they could not get hooked up?  3rd party cell providers sell you a connection to a major network, I don't really see how this is different.

I always had a terrible experience with Comcast right up until I canceled.  The woman helping me to cancel was apparently in the Philippines, she kept telling me how beautiful the beaches there are, how the weather is much better than where I live, etc.  Damn, now I feel bad that my internet sucks and where I live sucks too...

You should have asked her how much she was being paid and what her tax rate is
I've been around the world a dozen times.  I've learned that every location, situation and person has pros and cons.  It's better to look at the sunset across the beach than to look down the beach at the slum.

This. If I was sharing my internet with someone beyond immediate family I'd probably route their connectivity through a VPN to be half way safe. Wouldn't do it to start with though because of this concern.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
