So my wife is returning to work after having a baby
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:04:03 AM »
When we found out she was pregnant, we decided that she would leave her high stress job, take a few months off after birth and then look for a job with flexible hours.  So after losing her full time income, we adjusted our spending down to just one income.

The first part time job she found had no benefits and the commute was brutal, so she worked there for a month and kept looking for something better.  She finally found a local job where she can set her own schedule, picking up one or two days a week.  When I found out it also included benefits, I logged into their site and was surprised that they allowed us to contribute 100% of her income to the retirement account.  With the limited hours, it might not get maxed out this year (I'm guessing around $12k for the year), but it feels good to put all of her income into a tax advantaged account.  My long term goals are much clearer now than they were a couple years ago.  I guess that's what happens when you have a baby.

Are you able to afford daycare on one income?

For the one day a week that we both work, our parents have been watching the baby.  I don't suspect we will need daycare for another year or two.

that's a great situation.  You get the best of both worlds, care from a parent most of the time, some income to boost retirement savings.  We also "practiced" living on one income when I planned to stay home for a while.  What line of work is she in that she was able to find something so flexible with benefits?

She is a nurse, currently doing home care visits.  The retirement plan was truly a surprise, because her last per diem position didn't offer any benefits.  Now she works directly for a non-profit hospital, instead of a staffing agency.

Sounds like a great situation, I often wish I could do that, just to get away and talk to other adults :)

Congrats, that's great!

I'm planning to do roughly the same thing. My wife is just now getting back to work per diem after baby #2, and I told her to contact HR to find out the maximum 401K contribution rate; I'm hoping it's 100%. We don't need her paycheck now that I've discovered the MMM ways, so I'd rather just save the taxes. Maybe I'll circle back here and let you know how it works out.
