Small biking win
« on: September 30, 2015, 10:24:20 AM »
Ok, so it's not a major accomplishment, particularly compared to many on this board.

Today I managed to ride my bike to my daughters daycare.  This is a route that's always intimidated me because of some major intersections with sub-optimal traffic lights.  The length is good for a ride.  I took a 2.5 mile route there, and a 3.5 mile route back that avoids some of the worst intersections.

I'm still not ready to take my daughter on the ride yet, but maybe I'll be more comfortable with that after a few more test rides.  I'll also have to get a good bike seat for her, as our current double-wide trailer (hand-me-down) is way too wide for comfort on this route.

You are on the street level, so you know best what your roads are like, but your mention of your current trailer being "too wide" for your route gives me the impression that you are hugging a shoulder and trying to stay out of the way of the traffic.  Though it seems counterintuitive, the fact is, you are far safer as a cyclist if you TAKE UP MORE SPACE in the road, OUT OF THE DOOR ZONE AND OUT OF THE SHOULDER.  In other words, you ARE traffic, don't be afraid to act like it.  While you are hugging the shoulder, dar drivers that can't see you or think they can squeeze by without slowing down will whip by you, creating far more hazard and likelihood of harm to you, than if you occupied your rightful place a foot or two to the left of the white edge line, and let the traffic see you, slow down and go around you. All of this is especially crucial when you are traveling with a child.  (It's nerve wracking, but I did it myself for years, when my own kids were small.)  Using a double wide kid trailer might give you an even more imposing profile, and also make you more safe.

And congrats on your accomplishment -- it's a big deal to step outside your comfort zone and try the new thing.

Congrats! I'd say it's a BIG biking win, because that first step is the hardest!

Do you have a local bicycling (or bike and pedestrian) organization? They might have some more resources on best routes, as well as things like safety classes or guidelines to local rules/regs. The more educated/informed you are, the more confident (and safe!) you will be. :)

For the trailer/seat - get some things that add visibility - flags, blinky lights, reflective tape, etc. That will help reassure you as a parent that people can see you and your valuable cargo. Yes, drivers SHOULD see you anyway... but my perspective as a bike commuter has always been to make it REALLY REALLY HARD for someone to honestly say, "I didn't see him!"
