Hi Guys,

I want to share with you my happiest achievements lately on tracking, reporting my financial progress. Yes, real

It was about three years ago that I started meticulously keeping track of my expenses and investments. First, I used separate third party apps for expenses and investments. Mint is not an option in Denmark, and I did not see enough value in the local alternatives.

My good old excel reporting then allowed me to gather everything in one place. All I have to do in upload my bank statement in it, and categorise cash flows.

I had built plenty of reporting around it, but realised lately that the numbers got too complex to understand. They were not telling me a story anymore, but confusing me instead.

That was when I decided to rethink it all, based on my current dataset, and built a simple, easy dashboard.

GUYS, I am so excited to share with you my new dashboard ☺ I have enjoyed every bit of reflexion and work that went into it, and am simply looking at sharing my project with you.

Hope you guys enjoy! You are the ones I feel will get the point of what I tried to achieve.

Note: plugged in some numbers for illustration & I don't know how to autosize the picture to make it fit
tldr: Built this sexy dashboard. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Check it out!

OMG! This IS gorgeous. I actually am in the US but don't like to use Mint. I've been trying (well, stop-go-stop-go) to code my own financial dashboard and this is great inspiration. I'd love to know more about it if you feel like sharing.

Really nice job!

It looks awesome!  Congrats!  Probably far better than mint.com - I was just lamenting to myself this morning how tired I am of mint and all the minor frustrations.

I also love tinkering with spreadsheets, and tracking my finances with excel is something I enjoy a lot. However, your stuff is at a whole different level than mine. Fantastic work! I surely draw inspiration from this.

Edit: I have to add, that tracking a yearly saving target in a way you do is a great idea! Very rewarding, I believe.

Nice work.  I really like your Monthly Average Chart

I will post mine to give you some more ideas of how other people do it.  Not any better just different.  I keep mine in different tabs not necessarily on a "dashboard".

Hi @Dutchman,

Great reporting you have got going on, and thanks for sharing :)

I really like the chart with "My Investment Only", detailing the split of investment streams over time.

It is fun to see you categorize your wife as an expense item, in "detailed Pie of Spendings" :)

I note that you combine expenses, investments and taxes in the "expenses" pie chart. Do you have a separate was to look exclusively at expenses?
It would be interesting for you to display expenses only, by categories, trending overtime ( similarly to "Yearly progression of spending categories").

Talk to you, Dutchman

Hi Hene40,

Thanks!

I spend so much time playing around with my spreadsheets too, for fun. I love it.

You have hit the nail right on the head with your comment about the reward.

Here is a bit more context for you:

I used to focus mostly on tracking expenses. I had the objective to reduce my expenses by as much as possible, in order to save a pre-defined saving rate for the Fiscal Year.

However, I found I was getting unhappy and negative, trying to lower expenses all the time, which is potentially an endless project.

However, if I use the proxy of Investing, it is a whole different game. The end result is the same, but the psychology is different.

The plan here is to see cash going in my investments. Not focus on the pennies expensed, even if it means the same in the end. This new outlook might work best for me.

LEt me know if you'd like to chat about your reporting!

See you around, Hene40.

That is amazing. Is it something you could remove the actual data from and make a template out of?
