At the start of this year, we were paying $260 a month for two smartphones and a Verizon Fios DoublePlay of internet and TV (with 2 DVRs @ $15 a month). Earlier this year we ditched cable for Netflix/Hulu, I consolidated my cell phone with my work provided phone and as of this morning switched my wife to redpocket for $35 a month (she wanted unlimited minutes to start out).
We still have Fios internet for $74.99 a month, but I need this for work so I can work from home occasionally (Big benefit in NE winters). Tried switching to comcast for a promo rate, but their ineptitude infuriated me.
All told, reduced cable/cell phones by 50%! Still some work to do, namely
1) Call Verizon to negotiate a price reduction in exchange for contract ($5-10 a month)
2) Convince wife she will be fine with 3,000 minutes a month ($7 a month)
2b) Her phone is 5 years old. When it dies, buy a GSM compatible phone (used/refurbished) and reshop plans.
3) Consider ditching either Netflix or Hulu (unlikely)
By far not the most badass, but I'm happy with $130+ month in savings.
