Saving Money on Home Renos
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:32:05 AM »
We are putting a suite in our home.  One of the quotes was for $50,000!  Yes, $50,000.   I expect we will be under $20,000 all in by the time we are done.

We were quoted $5000 for debris removal and dumping fees alone.  We decided to DIY that part.  The total cost for concrete (lots of that jackhammered and cut out for new plumbing and entrance) and construction waste disposal was approx $120 plus a bit of gas and four hours of our time.  We used our Toyota Tercel with utility trailer.  It was actually really fun to do it together because we got to go down to the concrete place and mix with the big gravel trucks and cats and wear hard hats... in the Tercel.  It felt a little bit like walking with dinosaurs.

Anyway, that utility trailer sure has come in handy and paid for itself over and over again.   I have no skills for renos except for design, fetching and carrying materials and a willingness to cart away and recycle the waste, but even this part has saved a lot of money.
