Saving 80% of income
« on: August 09, 2018, 03:39:34 PM »
Just wanted to share a cool graphic display of what my wife and I (no kids) earn and spend each month. I think we are doing great and on track to be FI in a handful of years! Open to any comment and suggestions for how to optimize even more :)

The Sankey graphs are really cool. I think typically people exclude investment gains from their income for calculating savings percentage. Without that it looks like you're at 79.5%, so close enough. Congrats!

There are always ways to optimize expenses further, at the point you're at it's just a matter of prioritization of money and time.

love the sankey graph.  and the savings rate is seriously impressive as well. It must be nice to live in a LCOL area.

I'm still on target for 80%+ this year using the MMM method, which includes the employer retirement plan contribution, but not gains.  Relevant thread in this same section:

Daaaaang. Good job!

If you want advice for how to push it further, I'd ask if either of you use the gym membership(s), just because most people have them but really don't use them. If you do, though, that's kind of a drop in the bucket, so who cares :)

Great numbers on the food for two people!

I include employee contributions as savings, but I also include them as income.

by the way how do you save 7660 / month in pre-tax?  That's 91k/yr.  I have a 457b and 403b and that only gives me $36k per year.

He mentioned it was his wife and him, so I assume two earners.

I alone am able to invest $79500 pre-tax in my 401a and 457B  (that includes the employer contribution) although I'm not maxing out the 401a.

The limit on each is $18.5k, so that would give you $37K plus match.

Thanks everyone! I'm really happy with where we are at. To break down the pre-tax savings:

Me: 18.5k in 401k, 5.5k in IRA, 6.9k in HSA
Wife: 18.5k in 401k, 18.5k in 457b, 5.5k in IRA, ~4k in a self-directed retirement account through work (offered as alternative to pension plan)

I include any matches we get
I also diverted part of the investment gains into pre-tax savings since the growth in the retirement accounts isn't taxed

Gym membership is my wife's, to a climbing gym she uses 2-3 times per week. I'm fortunate to have a gym at work.

Also we live in Denver, so not exactly a LCOL area, but we make do with a small apartment

Edited to add: given your prodigous savings rate, it might make sense to put some money in taxable accounts if you plan to FIRE soon.  It'll be easier to FIRE with some savings in non-retirement accounts.
Also we live in Denver, so not exactly a LCOL area, but we make do with a small apartment

That's an impressive amount of pretax savings.

So you definitely should be FIRE in a few years.  The Fire Calculator I made says an 80% savings rate should get you to FIRE in about 5 years starting from 0 initial savings.

that is an impressive spend in Denver. Great job.
