Rode 25 miles on my bike
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:46:55 AM »
After four months of being a creepy forum stalker, this is my first time posting.

I just rode 25 miles on my bike and I am feeling like a super badass! I have been a complainypants for 20 years about my knee that gives me trouble. I swore off riding bikes forever. It made it hurt more. Reading this blog gave me the strength to push through the pain and ride. Now, my knee does not hurt when I am biking (and I must say, my legs are getting rock hard). I guess I just needed some good ol' conditioning.  I started off slow doing a couple miles at a time and in just two months I am kicking ass! Thanks to all for being so awesome to motivate me to break the chains of laziness and excuses.

Yay! Congratulations to riding 25 and increasing your health! I had the same problem with my knee but when running. I increased knee strengthening exercises and ran trails instead of concrete. Now, I have no pain. And it all came from starting with a half-mile to a full marathon and lots of encouragement. Keep up the great work and new lifestyle!

Congratulations.  I too am rather new to cycling after years of running.  I started riding this spring in preparation for RAGBRAI which is a big annual bike ride across Iowa that involves over 20,000 people each year.  I started small and worked my way up.  I remember my first 25 mile bike ride and how good that felt.  I put in 1,300 miles prior to the event and nearly 500 during the week of the event and it felt great to accomplish something like that.  No matter how far you need to ride, you can always break it down into a series of shorter rides with stops.  My riding partner and I made it a habit to get up on Saturday and ride 50+ miles to a favorite brew pub and then have my wife collect us.  It made for a good training exercise and gave us a reason to keep on pedaling.  Keep going, you are doing great!

Thanks Chippewa and Target2018! I like the idea of a weekly riding adventure. It would be super bad ass if I could work up to the 35 miles each way to one of our favorite spots in the Adirondacks for a camping weekend. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will do it. I have been riding home from work a couple of times a week (my husband rides his bike in the morning and I drop off the car with him and ride my bike home). That is about 10 miles. Makes it even better to know that I am saving money by only commuting with one car (our Honda Fit). Baby steps!
