Raspberries Are On !
« on: July 14, 2020, 11:47:20 AM »
Bumper crop of wild raspberries this year.  Went out this morning and picked enough to make a 2-3 pies.
Going to attempt good old fashioned heart attack lard crust like grandma used to make.

What kind of plants do you have?  Container or in ground?  How many and where did you get them?  I'd like to gorw container rasberries.  They are so expensive at the market.

The key with raspberries is multiplying them. In our climate you can start with a few of the expensive store plants or better yet ask around and get starts for free.  Raspberries multiply by spreading out via the roots. They grow like a weed in good soil.

Every year you can dig them up and spread them out further. We went from a 1ft clump, to a 4ftx4ft clump, to a 40ft long hedge this year. I moved them a little late this year so the relocated plants haven't fruited 100% but we are getting 2 cups a day this point.

They do much better in the ground and that's where you'll get the automatic spreading action happening. They are a very mustachian plant. Labor+Time+Exponential Growth=Big Payoff.

The garden raspberries have been slowly ripening for a while now, but we've just been eating them as we go. Our wild raspberry patch is a bit rough to get to, but I slid down the slope today and had a look; big, red, juicy, and almost free of bugs. Will bring a bucket tomorrow and pick them. There are some red and black currants left too, so maybe I'll mix it all and make a berry cake?

Awesome!  My SO and I were riding our bikes at a state park last weekend and passed a lady out in the brush with a bowl in her hand, and I knew she was picking some.  Had we not just begun our ride, I might’ve stopped, too!  We also have a [wild] bunch up north at my dad’s cabin, they grow wild as weeds alongside the roads.  The bears really like’em, if I don’t get to them first. ;)

In my front yard garden, my summer-bearing (Canby Red) just finished fruiting and I was able to save about 20 raspberries total in the freezer because I’m one of those “eat as I harvest until I get a stomach ache” types…and repeat the next day, til it’s all over. :) I also have a Héritage variety – I think it and my Canby Red have become one giant hedge, so I’m unsure which stalk is which plant at this point.  Well, the ones that hurt are the Héritage (the Canby is ‘thornless’), probably, and we'll see which vines put out fruit this fall.

I just bought and planted a Fall Gold raspberry bush which is also ever-bearing, for late summer and spring fruit.  I was hoping the garden store had Blackcap, but no..so gold instead!  I can’t wait until I have more space!

What I've been picking are not plants that were planted by myself or anyone else we know, they are wild plants.
We've got numerous patches wild raspberry and blackberry on the farm.   Way more than we could ever harvest.

I picked some today, in the side of a non busy street close to our house. Not more than for one pie though, but better than nothing. DH is already making plans to make wine of them, combined with his limited number of grapes in the freezer from the last two years.

Raspberries are great! They just keep growing and spreading.

We has 100 in our old house we just sold. As other posters said, you just dig up a shoot and move it to another spot and that spot will become a patch.

Well, to sell the house we had to clean up our backyard. We dug up a lot of berries and moved them to our new house. They are already shooting our here and there. But the deer, turkey and squirrels are going to town on them. The patch is not thick enough to keep them out yet.
