To the people who are losing money raising chickens.
Make your coop from recycled/ free materials. People throw away perfectly good left over building materials everyday.
Go to a feed store/ place that sells baby chickens in early spring and let the people there know that if anyone trys to bring chickens back to call you (feed stores wont take them back and people think chickens are cute until they get about 5 weeks old). You will get free chickens that dont need the heat lamp/ starter medicated feed expense.
Then look up how to cheaply grow barley fodder and use this to supplement pellet feed (chickens waste crumbled feed, if they dont eat pellets they arent hungry enough anyway)
Ask the feed store to sell you broken bags of pellets at a discount
supplement feed with table scraps/ leftovers from garden/ free range.
I only feed 100 lbs a year to 12 chickens.
