Travelling on Christmas Day is pretty great and we have done it several times to various places through the years. We get our Christmas mornings with presents, followed by a nice turkey lunch, then off to the airport. Airports are quiet and flights are generally reasonable for school vacation season.

We also like to go to Disney World in the last half of August. One of the cheapest times to travel there. And it’s less busy. September is even better (lowest crowds of the year), but my kids are back in school.

New Years Day is great to travel too, especially for am departures. Most people are already where they want to be or hung over from where they went :)

Just had an off-peak vacation:

LOCATION: Little Buffalo State Park, Pennsylvania.

We rented the modern cabin, which is 3 beds, 2 baths, for 4 nights.

At $560, we basically had 100 acres to ourselves.

We did a college tour, day trip to Hershey, and hike each day.

Recommending for you guys with the caveat that you should either bring mattress toppers and bedding (we used sleeping bags). Due to the mattresses, I could only sleep about 7 hours each night, which is fine, but one morning I tried to get another 30 minutes, and was up whether I liked it or not.

My DH is a teacher and I work remotely so I have to adjust to his schedule/time off, however, he is lucky he gets 6 days off for president's *week* in February. We just went to Cancun :)

If anyone has ideas about places to visit in February please let us know, we are on the West Coast. We have never been to Hawai, Bermuda, Bahamas etc, so any island would be a good idea!

In Maui in February the whales are in, so that's a great time to go.

I am always fascinated by whale videos but scared at the same time, thanks for the recommendation!

Some bad news for people who like to vacation "off peak". It seems that many more travelers are looking to travel off peak these days, which means there are less deals to be found during off peak times.

Are there any off-season travel deals left, or has the pandemic undermined them all?

From Miami to communities around national parks like Zion in Utah and Joshua Tree in California, high-occupancy rates during traditionally off-season times of the year are muddling what was normally a reliable way to save money — traveling when few others are.

I’d say yes and no.  I just finished another National parks shoulder season trip.  Death Valley (sort of peak), Joshua Tree, Sequioa,  Yosemite.  While the parks weren’t empty, they were not full either.  My hotel just outside of the Big Oaks Flat entrance was 1/2 price over high season, I was one of the first people at the day use parking lot at 9 am.  I was the first person at Hetch Hatchy at 9am.  Similar experiences at the other parks as well.

I've been to Denali a couple of times in the spring shoulder season. They don't have the road plowed the full distance at that point, but they do let you drive your own car around on what is clear (only tour buses are allowed in the summer). Spring is also a nice time to visit Alaska because you have a better chance of actually seeing the Aurora Borealis in a season where the sun fully sets.

As a regular visitor to Denali I can confirm it's a whole different experience in the spring as well as the fall and winter. Such immense wilderness of peace and solitude. The state park (outside the NP) also has some really nice places to visit and even in the summer it's not as busy as the NP. At the risk of upsetting my local friends... Check out the Kesugi ridge trail if you want a 1-3 day hike with stunning views of the Alaskan Range and Denali. Also the Kesugi Ken campground in the state park is as nice as any within the NP and has amazing views on clear days.

If you want a Mustachian experience without the bustle of the park hit me up to go bike the Denali highway (the old road to the park is actually outside the park) as it's gravel and sparsely travelled except during hunting season. Photos from last June's FIRE celebration trip.

Late November/Thanksgiving is my favorite time to travel internationally.  It got me out of Seattle where it was always rainy and windy and cheap flights to non-traditional thanksgiving destinations for Americans (like Hawaii and Cabo were terribly expensive, but places like Guatemala, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia were not).

I just cancelled our 7-night vacation in Breckenridge from May 20-27th, for $692. Kind of bummed, but there is a good reason for the cancellation.

Our tenants in our lower level one-bedroom unit on Kauai are moving out and it will be vacant. We are cancelling the trip to occupy our Kauai unit for 2 months. Wife leaves on May 10th and I leave on May 14th with our son. We get back on July 14th. We are going to furnish the unit and increase the rent.

This also prevents me from hitting my 40 days of snowboarding goal for the year. I'm going to top out around 30 days for the season. Oh well, there is always next year.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
