Pocketed my insurance claim check
« on: May 26, 2017, 07:38:00 PM »
I just became ~$4k richer today... One of my cars got pelted in a recent hail storm.  The insurance adjuster came out to assess the damage and counted several hundred dents, all serviceable via paintless dent repair.  She handed me a check for the damage minus my deductible and told me I could either get the car fixed or pocket the money.  She even said the dents were so small, they could very well just pop back out themselves in the heat during summer months.  I smiled, shook her hand, and promptly made my deposit.

Interesting.  A few years back my SO at the time had to file a claim for a small dent in the side of her truck body from tapping a road sign during a spinout (black ice).  It was barely noticeable to me.  In any event, her insurance wanted a receipt and photo proof that the repair was completed and the money was NOT pocketed.  I'm curious who you use as they sound much easier to deal with.  It was either Progressive or Geico that she was with, I really can't recall which.

I am with Progressive.  Were you by chance still making payments on your SO's car at the time?  I own my vehicle free and clear, which could explain the difference in treatment.

We had the same thing happen to us but with two cars in the same hailstorm. We were also with Progressive and owned the cars free and clear. We still have one of the cars with the hail damage, the minor dents don't bother us in the slightest and I think between the two cars we pocketed about $4500 which went a long way to purchasing our next vehicle when we got rid of the older one (2002 mercury sable).  I'd almost advise people to park outside or go for a drive if a hail storm is in the forecast!

I would suggest not intentionally putting your vehicles in harms way with the hopes of collecting $...it will most definitely increase rates for all, and no one wants that.

This might be state dependent or you might have mis-understood the requirement for proof of repair.  When you have damage paid, you can make your own choice to fix or not to fix.  When I have damage repaired, I let the insurance company work directly with the repair facility.  This way, when they find hidden damage, I don't need to be involved.  When done, I pay the body shop the deductible and am finished.

With any other repair or not, a form is sent to document the repair as being completed.  This does not in any way require that you repair the vehicle.  What it does do is if you don't provide proof, and the vehicle is later damaged, stolen or totaled, the prior damage amount paid is deducted from the amount given to you, if it involves the same area of the car.  So if someone rams your rear bumper and you shrug and decide to just drive around with it duct taped together and then someone else rams it......you are only paid for the new damage minus the old damage.

Indeed, hail damage is the best because the car if still completely functional.  Remember to remove collision from your insurance policy now.  Leave glass coverage in place.

I've known a few people who got serious checks out of hail damage.

There was also a dealership that was damned near giving away cars after a serious hail storm went through Iowa.

I expect if you still have a loan on the car, the loan company will require you to actually fix stuff - but if it's yours?  Have fun!

Years ago I lived in a city that had a terrible hail storm.  I took my car to be repaired.  When I picked it up I discovered that the key method of "repair" for dimples from hail was using a hair dryer to heat the metal so the dimples did indeed pop back out.

My 15 year old (in perfect condition!) Ford Focus got rear-ended with a small scratch on the fender.  They had Progressive insur - took it to the nearest office/inspection and within 15 min it was evaluated and a check cut for $500.  Easiest money ever.  Hubby buffed out most of the scratches -- (almost) good as new!

Both cars totaled (cosmetic damage only!) by the same hail storm.

We cleared $10,000 for the cars and most of a new roof.

Woot!

Forgot about this thread! Yes, it was being paid on at the time, which makes perfect sense.  Don't know why I didn't think of that.

My jeep was in a bad hail storm that shattered the front window and put tons of dents over the hood and roof and sides, but I only got the window fixed.  Didn't bother with insurance for dents because I figured I wouldn't fix it anyway...and was worried about rates going up afterwards.  Maybe that was a mistake?  How much did your rates go up or did they even go up?  I use progressive as well.

I'm sorry to say that was a mistake to not file a claim.  Your rates would not have gone up because of a hail damage claim (not your fault).
