Only drink water!
« on: December 20, 2013, 07:36:50 AM »
A nice cool glass of water is a fabulous thing to enjoy either by itself or with a meal. I prefer without ice.  Pretty much everything else you are drinking is terrible for your health and/or wildly overpriced. We might allow an exception for fresh squeezed juices although you may as well just eat the fruit and get the fiber.

Have a look at your restaurant bill. Ever notice how much you are paying for drinks? Switch to water. It goes well with all foods.  Sugar drinks, caffeine, and alcohol are the road to ruin, both health and wealth wise. Forget the beer (carbs), wine ($$), coffees (stain teeth and affect heart rate), and sugary sodas (diabetes) or sugar free beverages (cancerous).

Take the savings at the restaurant and grocery and pocket them or redirect to better food.

Excellent call, sir. I've been doing this for years.

$2.50 for a soda or $5 for a beer + 20% tip for something that is bad for you, multiplied out over every time you go out, adds up.

Plus I only drink water at home, stocking the fridge with sodas will add up as well. Tap water is pretty close to free!

The last time I paid for a beverage at a restaurant was in January 2012.  I'm not sure what the time before that was.  I was alone at an IHOP in Phoenix, AZ.  I was exhausted and hungry, and had just gotten off a ~4 hour flight.  The person sitting me down asked if I wanted coffee or orange juice.  My tired brain told me that orange juice sounded awesome right then.  $2.99.  For a single glass of orange juice.  I was extremely mad at myself when I got that bill.  Never again.

At home I pretty much only drink either water (tap water), or dairy (raw milk these days, and we've started making our own kefir).  Once in a while we'll get fruit juice, maybe once every few months.

At work I'm the weirdo that drinks tap water when there's a water cooler right next to the sink.  I just prefer the tap water taste, plus I am pretty morally opposed to bottled water of any kind.

A coworker of mine told me his parents "only drink Voss water".  I thought he meant that was the only kind of bottled water they drink, but no, that's the only water they drink, day in and day out.  I saw two bottles of Voss water at Whole Foods yesterday for $5.  What is this I don't even

I'm that guy too! It pains me to see this MANY-THOUSANDS-OF-POUNDS truck idling while some poor dude gets out, breaking his back every day to haul gallons and gallons of water around town for office denizens, heaving them into piles in various storeroom, and so on. I'm not sure what would be better--if the bottles were secretly filled with tap water across the street or actually trucked in from some formerly-pristine remote spring thousands of miles away.

Luckily they recently upgraded to a "reverse osmosis" fancypants machine that at least hooks up to the city tap. I still just use tap water though.

My weakness is the Mango Lassi at select restaurants, but other than that it's pretty much all water all the time!

I pretty much just drink water, too, except at breakfast -- for whatever reason I need something with actual substance and flavor at breakfast, so I keep milk and orange juice on hand for that.

What's ridiculous is that I see coworkers buying bottled water from the vending machines at work for $1.25 each, when there are kitchenettes with sinks and water coolers (filtered from the tap) on every floor of every building on our campus... *facepunch*

I bought a 40 oz metal water bottle over two years ago. It was twenty bucks, but it's survived several drops and falls that would have killed a synthetic bottle. It helps me ensure that I get in at least 80 oz of water a day, it's convenient, and I don't have to pay for overpriced plastic water bottles anymore.

I did it for about six months, a couple of years ago. It was basically a direct challenge by someone. Only water, no ice, no bubbles. For six months. It was a good experience. However I like a warm beverage in the winter months and I dislike hot water by itself so didn't continue.

Since I've started riding to work, I always have my 50oz camelback.  Including the ride in and out, I go though it 2~4 times a day... so 100~200oz of water.  I just wear it, and mindlessly sip at it all day, that way I'm not 'forcing' myself to drink water, it's just there!  If I don't want more, I stop sipping.

I drink coffee in the mornings, water all day & maybe a glass of wine at the end of the day 3-4 days a week. I roast my own coffee unless I've found some in a dumpster somewhere & buy $3 bottles of wine, but I might just see if I can go to only water for a month or two and see if it's worth it.

As an aside 100 oz of water seems like a lot to me. Since I've given up eating many carbs I don't drink much more than 4 (8-12 oz) glasses of water for the entire day, even when riding my bike 20 miles in the summer.

Yeah, 100oz is a lot. Most days I drink my water bottle twice, but I don't exactly fill it up to the tip top. Occasionally I drink it just once, and I don't feel the worse for it.

Yeah, I am thinking of doing this for 2014. I have given up on alcohol so this shouldn't be a stretch since I usually feel terrible each time I drink pop. The only exceptions I can think of are tea at select occasions, or things like mango lassi or other specialty drinks that restaurants prepare.

I would definitely be up for this, except I really like a hot cup of herbal tea as I get so cold at work during the winter, and I blend vegetables and drink them (severe chewing problems/pain because of TMJ)  But I will be willing to give up alcohol and coffee, and drink water, cups of hot tea when I come home, and my blended vegetables, for 2014!  Goodbye whiskey, wine, and coffee!

While not drinking only water,  your post and others have inspired me to drink water rather than diet sodas.  It won't be cold turkey but I've found it remarkably easy and have had no cravings.   Water is very refreshing.
I agree on the high cost of drinks while eating out.   Be sure to avoid the bottled water offered at some pricey resturants,  I've cooked entire meals for less cost.

Thanks for your encouraging post.

I've yet to figure out why people think that a little of something must be good for them if a whole lot of it is obviously bad for them.  What other things does that reasoning apply to?

This is very healthy of you.  It's not for me, though.  While I probably chug multiple glasses of tap water per day (the down the hatch method that develops when one grows up in a fairly arid climate), for pleasure I like tea, wine, beer, milk, OJ mixed with water, and other sorts of bubbly water.

As a compromise, I will try to drink less beverages when I am out to eat.  This should be easy since I won't be doing that much this year.  Exceptions will be 1) beer/wine when I with my SO on date night and 2) hot chocolate when skiing.

The funny thing about ordering drinks when dining in a restaurant is that critical moment when the wait person asks for your drink order. This is where one is typically both feeling obliged to order something and very curious what potentially interesting things may be available.  This is the moment to be strong!!

"water, please!" you say.

The amazing thing is although it can be hard to get past the ordering drama, during and after the meal you will realize the water is fine and nothing more is warranted.

Yup, I agree! Besides, who cares what the waiter/waitress thinks, as long as you're not an asshole.. (then you could be in trouble).

I like to enjoy a cider or beer at home every so often, but you're right - at restaurants, ordering anything besides water is a total rip.
I do have a weakness for a nice sparkling water. Perrier is $4.xx for a 6 pack at Wal Mart. Pretty reasonable once-a-month purchase.

I agree with what you disagree :)

My grandparents Italian peasants drank strong espresso with grappa in the morning (probably later during the day too...) and drank cheap homemade wine all day (sometimes diluted with water from the village fountain). Most of the people around them who lived that way also lead active and rich lives and many died centenarians. I try to live my life like they did, a healthy Mediterranean diet sprinkled with Japanese influences (my wife is Japanase), everything in moderation, including work. As for tea (eewwww), it is consumed abundantly from morning to bedtime by my wife and her side of the family who are ethnic Okinawans who have the longest life expectancy in the world.

I get free soda at work so it can sometimes be too easy to say, "well if it's free what harm is it?".

2 for 2 on no soda so far this year.

I'll keep drinking beer though.  ;)

On those occasions when we eat out, we only drink water.  Sometimes we get crazy and squirt some lemon or lime in it.  At homes my wife and I also drink coffee with cream, unsweetened tea, and red wine.  Our son drinks milk and juice (usually cut with water).  As a rule of thumb, we try to keep beverage calories to a minimum; drinking does not satiate your appetite...eating does.

Also so say respected nutritionists, e.g.:
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/alcohol/
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/coffee/
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-drinks-full-story/#level-2

You will find these same people very much abhor sugary drinks, and the sugary drink industry probably has more lobbying money to throw around than the other ones, so I think it's pretty safe to say they haven't been bought. ;)

I don't drink alcohol so I feel ok with the fact that my only vice is coffee and the occasional diet drink when I'm watching a game. Other than that, I agree, water all the way.

I don't drink anything but water and I find I don't miss the variety at all. Admittedly, I've never developed a serious habit, but this is one area I'm happy to never think about. In social settings I occasionally drink something else, but otherwise it simply isn't an issue.

I mostly drink water, tea (both caf and decaf) and coffee.  I use soy milk to splash in my tea and coffee and to make hot cereal.  I used to drink juice (the fancy organic kinds), but now I don't want to spend the money on that.  And it's probably better to just eat the fruit.  And no alcohol for me these days.  That simplifies my life and is easier on the bank balance.

I'm currently challenging myself to drink at least 2 liters of water per day.  Maybe after a month or so, I will increase that to 3.

I started drinking mostly water back in 2008 or so. Prior to that I had been drinking lots of soda, various "coffee" drinks, lots of alcohol and high-sugar juices. I basically quit cold turkey, only drinking alcohol at special events and having a healthier juice for breakfast once in a while. Those first few weeks were hell. I was coming down off my caffeine addiction and I felt that water was just so boring. However, it saved me tons of money, it's healthier and I started having more energy than ever before. It's amazing how stupid so many people are who will only ever drink soda at meals and special coffees for daily pick-me-ups.

I'm getting closer to "only water". Alcohol is my main temptation, but my consumption is down quite a bit.

Mixing plain tap water with the occasional glass of seltzer is what really helps me. ONLY plain water gets a little stale for me, especially at meals.

Juices that you see at the store are almost as bad for your health as soda.

I'm appalled whenever my boyfriend has decided to buy beer when we are eating out. I would rather spend how ever much money buying him packs of beer at the liquor store.

On the topic of water, the last couple years I have cut out most sugary drinks and pop, although when I want the sweet ones and am tempted I buy the powdered drink mixes. I have bad teeth so it helped looking at all the drinks out there and seeing how much acid was in them, costing me thousands of dollars. If I could drink carbonated water all the time I would be happy. (still unsure on some of the costs for the carbonation thing so I haven't looked into buying any of the units)

At work I have employer provided coffee, tea and filtered water, all of which I partake in liberally throughout the workday.  At home, I have tap water in refrigerated containers for when I feel like something cold, but usually I'll just drink it straight from the tap.

My son likes some flavor so I add some generic Crystal Light to his sometimes. He does get a box of 100% juice with lunch.

Oh, and I buy a bottle of wine occasionally, maybe twice a month. Bottom shelf or whatever is on sale. ;-)

For the most part it's tap water though, so our beverage expenses are pretty low.

Yup, huge fan of this!

On Saturday I went out for lunch after volunteering and not drinking soda or another drink easily saved $2. Then that night when I went to the opera I didn't feel any impulse to pay for drinks during intermission or at the after party. This coupled with being fortunate to find free street parking a block from the theater made this a very mustachian night for me (discounts were very cheap, esp for my seat!).

A little water is good for you. Too much water will kill you, and I'm not referring to drowning, but to water intoxication - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication You hear about water intoxication every once in a while when they hold those stupid contests to see who can drink a ton of water the fastest.

I've done the only water thing before, but I like tea too much.

I drink mostly water and tea (well, mostly tea), and rarely a soda, frapachino, or some alcoholic drink. I drink milk if I have cookies and I'll drink juice or punch if I'm at an event and it is there for free. I brew all my tea at home so it costs next to nothing (I estimate ~$0.35 for 3 quarts).

Only water here.

Been doing this for years as I find the taste of soda ruins your palate during a meal, and it leaves you with a sick sugar overload feeling in the stomach. Soda is disgusting and terrible for you; I really don't get the allure.

So many benefits of being all water all the time.
-Save up to $2 + tip each meal. In some cases this can be over 20% of the cost of eating out.
-Stay in shape despite eating more than everyone at the table, since you are avoiding 200 to 500 completely empty calories
-Can taste the food how it was intended to be tasted, without supplementing the meal with grams upon grams of extra sugar
-So much better for your health to stay well hydrated with water all the time
-Better for your teeth to avoid walking around with a mouthful of sugar after your meal

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
