As someone who enjoys exercise I’ve always had some form of the prison yard gym setup similar to MMM. This has worked well but I recently stumbled into a really great setup using the Peloton app. Normally anything associated with Peloton is insanely expensive; however I wanted to share this setup since it is a very nice experience with minimal cost.
The Equipment:• Bike: To keep cost at a minimum for this I went to my sister’s large apartment building in Chicago and talked to the maintenance team. Every 6 months they throw away all of the un-claimed old bikes in the bike room of this large building. It turns out all major apartment buildings do this! So after a brief 3 week wait I was able to go down on “cleaning day” and take my pick from about 30 bikes that they were ready to throw out.
• Indoor Bike Trainer/Stand: This is the only item that actually cost any money. After some research I went with this bike stand from amazon: (non affiliate link)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GC2HWDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_titleWith the bike and bike trainer secured now it was time to download the Peloton app. The app costs 21.24/month which is a little on the high side for a recurring subscription in my book. However in their fine print Peloton offers us a super handy way to reduce this cost! You can add up to 3 other members to your account and all three members can use the app simultaneously through this 1 single membership. Armed with this information I asked around and it turns out that 1 friend and 1 family member were interested in splitting the monthly fee with me, reducing the cost down to $7.08/month :)
To complete the setup I simply took an old android tablet that was lying around and downloaded the Peloton app. From there I took the free chrome cast that came with this old tablet, hooked it up to and old spare TV and set everything up on top of a workbench in the basement. I've attached a picture of the final setup to this post so you can see how easy and simple it is.
Weekly Workout Schedule:The app also has great workouts beyond just cycling. I’m by no means a trainer or fitness expert but after some trial and error I came up with the weekly workout schedule below:
• Shoulders & Arms
• Yoga & Core
• Biking & Deadlift
• Chest & Back
• Yoga & Core
• Rest
Hopefully other forum members find this post useful and maybe even band together to split memberships with each other to stay fit on the cheap!
