Observations from a new bike commuter
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:52:06 AM »
I started riding a bike to work in April and have since ridden to work 25 days (roughly 2-3 days per week). My commute is 11 miles round trip. I calculate a $100 gas savings so far.

A few observations I've made in this time:
- the ride gives me an opportunity to think, clear my head, destress. I love this aspect.
- by car my commute takes 15 minutes, by bike 25 minutes.
- riding in 45 degree rain or 90+ degree temps is not that bad, it's an adventure and I like adventures. It's always been cool and pleasant in the morning.
- I haven't had to shower at work, but do a full clothes change in the office bathroom.
- My coworkers think I'm nuts, but most live 1-2 miles from the office and drive cars every day.
- I have grown to love my bike panniers. I carry my work clothes in them. No backpack keeps my back cool and dry. Also work great for grocery runs.
- I started riding mostly for the health benefit. I've dropped just 5 lbs, but I feel more in shape now than I have in the last couple years.
- I visit clients around town a couple days a week and haven't been able to bike every day as I would prefer. Still 2-3 days per week has felt great.
- Random tips:
I tuck my wallet/keys/cell phone in a sock in the work clothes set. This goes in the pannier with the other clothes and holds those important items securely.
Always wear sunglasses, they keep water/road debris out of the eyes.

I ride a Diamondback Trace 1, hybrid style bike. I had an large REI dividend (a product of my REI Visa card) and a nice coupon code so I only spent $38 out of pocket for the bike. I've added a clearance rack, panniers, fenders and lights. It's been great so far. No suspension and skinny tires are pretty efficient!

WAY TO GO!

i started riding this month (once last week, once today.  prob tomorrow), so i don't have the breadth of experiences you have.  not sure i'll be riding in the rain or not...  agree with most of your other observations, esp #1.

biggest reason for riding was also exercise.  my knees and hips have demanded i stop running (last fall), so this gives me an outlet.  if commuting becomes more frequent, i'll probably add panniers as well.  last week i brought a change of clothes, etc, the day before, and took everything home the day after.  obviously that doesn't work if you bike 2 days in a row (ok, it could..), but kinda cuts out Mon and Fri from the mix.

it's been fun. i've got LOTS of people asking about it - one has already started (last week as well), and we'll probably both ride in tomorrow.  that will have to be the 1st time we've had 2 bikes at the bike rack at the same time!!!  One other has said he'd probably do it as well (he's traveling this week, so no chance of 3 tomorrow).  most people asking live too far (>20 mi) to try it, tho.  still, it's given me a bit of "rock star" attention lately :)

car commute:  17 min, bike: 40-ish, on an 8.5-9.0 mile ride (i take a longer route home to avoid some traffic).  also no shower.
as for my wallet - i just take my drivers lic, debit card and some cash and rubber band them together and carry in a pocket.
also need to remember to bring my work key fob.

CL Fuji Pulsar (road bike).  will prob need new tires after the summer.

Thank you for posting. This is one more reason I can cite to my spouse in favor of riding a bike. My spouse's commute is the one most amenable to riding.

I'll second how awesome panniers are -- not only do you sweat less, they don't exacerbate my back problems and (if you get large ones) you can carry quite a bit. Mine are totally waterproof and very convenient.

I just feel energized after riding to work and riding home. It's a great feeling and the regularity of the exercise cannot be beat.

Also a commuting newbie. On the days I don't get to bike home (like this week, where I've been shuttling my Mom to the doctor multiple days) I find I really miss it.  I've also noticed that after the first half dozen times - and some good tips from these forums - I am much more confident in traffic.  I'll be biking home today and really looking forward to it.  It's my favorite 45 minutes of the day.

With the morning coffee running a very close second.....  ;-)

Bikeforums.com is an excellent place for great information and bicycling comraderie. The sub forums of Commuting and Living Car Free are my favorite. The Utility sub forum is truly mustachian though. They aren't always as friendly as this forum, but I still like it.

Just make sure to come back here!

What you described is exactly why I bike to work.

And after 9 years of doing so it still feels great.
