Fixed my car brakes for virtually free
« on: September 03, 2017, 08:05:47 PM »
My car is a 10 yr old Volvo with almost 100,000 miles.
I am devout about maintenance.  My father and his father were professional auto mechanics.  Grandpa had his own 'garage'.
The car looks and drives almost like new.
The brakes developed an annoying pulsing at low speeds with medium pressure on the brake pedal.
Driving with the windows down I could tell it was the front tire(s).  I thought it was the drivers, but wasn't sure.
I confirmed that the pads were good - they're less than a year old.
I swapped the front rotors - surprisingly easy once I bought the needed 15mm socket.  This confirmed that it was the brake rotor that was now on the passenger side.
My favorite local car parts shop doesn't turn rotors any more (due to rotors from China being so cheap), but my second favorite one does.   I took the rotor in.
When I went to pick it up, I took the gift card I had for them.  When I recently bought a battery for my old pick-up, they offered $10 gift card for the core battery instead of $5 cash.   Turning the rotor was $10.  I just had to pay the tax!   And the car drives practically perfect (in every way) again!

Now stop standing on the brakes when stopped and it shouldn't come back. :)

It's not usually "warping" but uneven pad deposits.

OH, I bet this all started when that deer hit me a bit over a year ago - I SLAMMED on the brakes and pushed the pedal down as hard as I could while my mind figured out what had just happened.

Hard braking isn't a problem. Hard braking then standing on them after you stop is.
