No driving within one neighborhood
« on: April 24, 2016, 09:52:51 PM »
Last week we started doing this, where any errands or trips within one neighborhood are bike/walk only.  This covers most of the stores we go to, and quite a few of our friends houses.  No hiccups so far, though I can foresee a day that we may want to buy something that doesn't fit into the bike trailer or the weather is just too nasty, though we have fit a hose reel in one trip, as well as 3 bags of groceries and a case of soda water in another.

I set the rule pretty much so I could justify the purchase of the bike trailer, seems to be working. I'm hoping I can keep the habit up during winter if I start now.  :)

I have a similar rule...anything within 3km (roughly 2 miles) is a walking trip.  This rule will get updated/extended soon since I just bought a used bike (it's being "fostered" by a friend right now while I reorganize my tiny storage shed to make room for it).  I'm lucky to live in a very walkable area and there are lots of bars/restaurants/cafes/parks/things to do in that radius.  I may have paid a bit more for my condo to live in this area but its much better than living on the extreme outskirts of town and needing a car to get anywhere!!  Good job!

What's the definition of "one neighborhood"? How many miles is that?

I think it's easier to just say 'yes it is in these 5 neighborhoods' instead of bargaining with myself for if it is an acceptable number of miles, but I guess it would work out to max 4 miles one way depending on the direction.

The area I consider my "neighborhood" is so small it really doesn't make sense to drive within it unless I'm transporting something very heavy or if one of us is sick or injured, but my whole city is only about four square miles and four miles in its longest direction. I do like the idea of picking a defined area that you won't drive within... just be careful you don't decide to go somewhere further away because you're too lazy to ride! (I'll admit I've done it.)
