New Side Hustle: Martial Arts Instructor
« on: July 22, 2014, 07:31:36 PM »
Martial arts is a passion of mine and my teacher offered today to pay me to teach the children's classes on weekday afternoons.  So basically, instead of paying for it, I am getting paid to exercise.  Not a bad side hustle, right?  I already work as a schoolteacher, so I am accustomed to teaching children.

Sweet! I, too, am passionate about martial arts and was just offered the chance to teach it at an alternative HS as a way for the students to earn PE credits. The HS holds classes on the college campus where I already teach so no additional commute required!

I, too, am passionate about martial arts and have taught classes in the past in lieu of tuition.  Thanks for the reminder that side hustles are't just about earning extra money.  They can also be about replacing existing costs with badassity. 8)

I'll also add that opening my own dojo was part of my traditional retirement plan and remains part of my FIRE plan.  I can't think of anything more fun than doing something I love which gives back to the community, teaches others valuable life skills, and covers costs.

Are you planning to stay in the bay?
ETA:  Are you looking for investors?

We are not planning on staying in the Bay Area when we FIRE, but I would absolutely be open to investors regardless when the time comes.  8)

PM me if you want more details.

Nice!

I need to start dusting off my Tae Kwon Do and start teaching my kids, though I might switch from the pure South Korean style I was taught to Olympic style.

I switched from ITF to WTF and it made a huge difference.  A lot of ITF techniques don't make much sense, especially the use of the "sine wave".  WTF also helps build core strength a lot better than ITF.

Very cool guys! Now I wish I hadn't picked a martial art where 90% of the clubs are non profit.

I feel you. I study Ji Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do and we are encouraged to teach as a way to give back, not as a way to earn money. Which means, I'll never get paid to teach at what I consider my "home" school. The best I would get is a free gym membership (our classes are offered at the gym I belong to), if I were to one day become the head instructor.

When I was asked to teach as part of this alternative HS program (so that the students can earn PE credits and graduate HS), I had to get the permission of my TKD teacher first. Since the alternative HS program is housed within the community college where I teach, the union requires that I'm a contracted employee so I knew I would have to collect a paycheck if I were teaching in this environment. Fortunately, my teacher said yes, but he also made it clear that this is not the path he intends for me (geez, talk about pressure!). I don't know that this teaching gig will be an ongoing thing. Could end up being only for a semester, but it could end up being long term if the stars align. In the meantime, I'll collect the cash and add it to the 'stache!!!
