New Floors - Small win!
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:16:10 AM »
So, we discovered in October that my wife is pregnant with our first child! Hip hip hooray! Then we realized that we had to do a few things around the house before our June 2016 due date.  Our floors were in terrible condition throughout due to raising two pups and a kitten.  We were just waiting until they were mature (now they are) and wouldn't tear things up anymore.  Two floors were stripped down to concrete and painted.  Main floor was warped around all seams and popping in places (laminate...never again).

So, we decided that new floors would be the first major investment in our house prior to baby #1.  This was both exciting and terrifying as this really put a bind in our debt repayment plans.

We were able to scrounge together the cash for the down payment of 50% of $6606.00 (Nov 16th) with a one month time frame of completion to pay for the finished product.  At this point we were going to need to place the second half down on our credit card, which we weren't enthused about and the floors had to be done.  We woke up yesterday morning to a nice unexpected $2000.00 Christmas bonus from my wifes employment which allowed us to pay the second half of $6606.00 in cash and still make it for the rest of the month :)  So, with some luck, we were able to pay cash for  $13,212 worth of new floors!

Small win in the grand scheme of things, but a win for us none the less.  We've been pushing hard to not use our credit cards and getting them completely paid off.  Being able to pay cash for the entire project made us extremely happy.  We both smiled and gave each other high fives.

The most important part of this entire situation is that it showed us two things:
1. By working off a budget, we can in fact pay the bills and debt off at the same time.
2. We don't need credit cards at all in our life.  If we want something small or large, we have the ability to actually save and pay cash for what we want.

Thanks for letting me share!

That my friend is awesome! First, congratulations on your expected arrival and second on your ability to realize a goal and make it happen. Your two points sum up the direction that I am headed in from reading these type of posts;

1. Make a plan and work the plan.
2. The realization that we all have the ability to exist off of what we make not what we borrow.

Thanks for reading!  It's been difficult for me in the past to save up for purchases.  I've always been the kind of guy that if I want it, I want it NOW.  With the kid on the way now, things are looking a lot different.  If I dont have the cash for it, then I don't need it until I do.

We are now working on paying our credit card debts off, then cars, then my wifes student loans.  We were wanting to move out of this house, but now the the recent floor remodel we actually kind of fell in love with the house again.  So instead of buying a bigger house we settled on saving up for a cargo van (Sprinter, etc) and convert it to a full on living/camping rig and go explore.

I would pay off the debts first, then save for the Sprinter van.

That's the plan! Thats why I stated paying off credit cards, students loans, and current cars.  The Sprinter is a future goal that will be a cash purchase once we've saved it up. So, instead of leaving our $137k home and purchasing a $600K house, we are going to settle here and enjoy it and get the Sprinter to go out and explore.

Good job!

I put in a new floor in the spare bedroom a year ago - still haven't finished installing trim :S Need to do the hallway floor, have the wood, still haven't started. Your route was quicker!

Much quicker, but also a lot more $$$.  I initially did the living room a couple years ago and swore I'd never do it again. Obviously paying for the job wasn't very "mustachian" but it was great being able to have a pro come in and bust it out in four days.
