New brakes on car!
« on: March 26, 2016, 06:01:38 PM »

I hadn't done any mechanical work other than routine oil changes in quite sometime.  But after watching a good YouTube video on replacing front disc brake pads and rotors I decided to give it a go.

Parts cost me $230 for premium quality but figured we saved about $200 in labor and it only took me a little over an hour to do the work.

Congrats!

Why did the brake rotors need to be replaced as well? Know the cause?

The rotors could have possibly been turned without replacing and I know while that would have been the more mustachian approach , I had a few different more knowledgeable people suggest replacing them. The car, a 2012 Camry with 57k miles had a bad front wheel shimmy when the brakes were applied.  That made the rotors suspect to be pretty warped.

That sounds right. Most mechanics won't turn them any more, the replacement cost is so low the labor runs more than a new set.

Did you inspect your tires when pulling/installing them? Front wheel shimmy can come from a tire with something in it/uneven wear.

Nice job on the do it yourself job, a Chilton's manual, youtube, amazon prime account, and maybe a bike to ride up to the nearest auto parts store for those "awww shucks" things (for me, it was high-temp grease for a rear set of shoes), and it's "Savings for days!".

Thanks for the reply and yes, the tires are worn, they are the original tires with close to 58k miles. New set of tires going on tomorrow.

As much as I like the Michelins I decided to go a cheaper route and buy a set of B F Goodrich which were around $300 less. Hopefully we'll get the 45k miles they're rated for.
