Negotiating 19 days of freedom
« on: June 13, 2019, 04:03:39 PM »
I have worked as a contractor for the majority of the last 10+ years. With that, I get good “benefits” usually, but not vacation.

At my current position, I have amazing pay, great benefits, but as typical, no vacation. I will make $300k+ this year, which is fantastic, however how my brain is wired, I basically work every day possible and don’t take time off because as a contractor, I don’t have the job security.

I started my current position a year ago this week. In January, they gave me a $45k raise without me even having to ask for it. As my contract was up for renewal this week, while I’m incredibly gracious for the raise, I decided I might be able to try and negotiate some vacation time. As such - they approved 10 days vacation and 9 days holiday! Now I can stop stressing about taking time off, knowing I don’t have the massive opportunity cost of missing out on my wages!!! This will add a HUGE positive impact to my quality of life.

Congrats on using your good position to negotiate!

It sounds like you're doing a terrific job, whatever it is that you do, so they're probably only too happy to give you a break so that you can be even more happy and high-performing in the role.

I can somewhat relate, being a long-time contractor myself. I used to rarely take breaks and sometimes worked 6-7 days a week when permitted, because of that sweet extra daily $$$. I've tuned it down a bit lately, as my stash has been growing and I want to enjoy my life a bit and pace myself.

The rates your earning look spectacular. Are you US-based? I have been curious whether there is much of a contracting market there. Though not being an American citizen, I'll probably have more success in other countries with more liberal work visas that allow for contracting.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
