Negotiated my rent increase and other small wins!
« on: December 13, 2013, 01:39:27 PM »
Hey all!  Got off the phone with my apartment manager a little while ago and found out my request to negotiate my rent was approved!  Instead of a 5% increase, I negotiated a 2.5% increase for a savings of $336 this year!  Just goes to show that it pays to ask!

I also took 5 minutes today to save $1 a month by canceling my EZ-Pass account.  Plus i'll get refunded the balance of the account or about $50.

Next on the chopping block is the cell phone.  Verizon contract is up in 32 days (win!) and I think i'm going to switch to Ting.

I couldn't do it without you guys!

Nice! Those small efforts add up in a big way.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Awesome stuff! Make sure you calculate your hourly wage for those tasks (e.g. if it took you an hour to negotiate your rent increase, that's an hourly wage of $336) for extra motivation :-)

Curious question on the EZ Pass.... Yes there's the monthly fee, but we also get discounted fares? If you don't use it, that's one thing... but for me, 4 tolls a month and that's break-even or so. I'm reimbursed my tolls & mileage anyways, but just curious on why you canceled it?

I looked back at my statements and hadn't used it for about six months so I decided it was an unnecessary expense.  I also considered the new HOV/HOT lanes around DC and the soon to be HOV/HOT lanes leading up to DC being EZ-Pass only.  I realized that I so seldom make this trip anymore that it wasn't worth the cost of being able to utilize these lanes when the main line will suffice.  Also, if I find myself commuting back and forth again I will punch myself in the face and then apply for a new EZ-Pass.

Ironically, the day after I mailed off the transponder, some work friends, the SO and I took a two day snowboarding trip to PA utilizing the turnpike twice.  Oh well!
