needs some help,if possible.
« on: July 13, 2013, 02:36:50 PM »

this is most likely a silly question, but i need to ask just for peace of mind.

I quit my job sept 2012, I have zero income, I am basically a stay at home wife (which I love), since I have no income, how would I handle next years tax's???? I would have had zero income for 2013, would it be best to file jointly with my husband, (no kids just him and I), OR do I just ignore doing tax's since I have zero income???
also, were we live we have to pay 0.5% of your income to the city, I recieved a letter today estimating my 2013 tax's for the 1st quarter of the year, this was based on last years income...(the city taxs were not taken form my paycheck, you had estimate them and send in a chq 4 times a year)...I will call them on monday explaining that I do not have a income and therefore should not be paying the city tax's...or should I be paying them????????????? just not sure.
any help would be great.

Not silly questions at all.  Remember, every silly question gives someone who can help you the opportunity to do so.  Win-win.

Assuming you live in the United States, the most beneficial and most common situation would be for you to file jointly with your husband.  You will report his income, and you will have two exemptions (check the boxes on 6a and 6b if you're using form 1040).  This will most likely result in the lowest amount of federal taxes.

Regarding your city's taxes, since you have no income, you will certainly not owe them taxes and therefore should not need to send in any estimated taxes.  If your husband has income and lives in the same city, though, you should probably be paying estimated taxes to the city on his income.  I would bet that a call to the city and explaining the situation will result in them telling you to not worry about it due to the change in your circumstances.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help on this matter................. I will call on monday and explain my change in circumstances, yes my husband will be paying the city  estimated tax's I have them all ready for the mail.
I feel so much better, common sense should tell me that no income means no income taxs , but when a bill arrived I got worried, but it the citys defence they do not know that I am a stay at home wife, I guess I should have informed them?????
thank you again for your comments.
hope you have a great weekend.

Your first instinct was correct, it just gets a little sticky when they send out a mailer with your estimated taxes owed due to the assumption this years income would be similar to last years.  A simple phone call should clear everything up.
Always ask the question, only good things happen when you have the proper information to move forward.
