Mustachian Vacation
« on: December 05, 2016, 03:01:14 PM »
I live in Huntsville, AL and have never been to New Orleans, LA.

Last week my employer sent out a notification of a local airline selling $15 one-way tickets to NO.

Airfare: $60.

My wife has a friend with a house in the French Quarter, they have agreed to let us stay.

Lodging: $0

The Bus from the airport to the house is $2.50.

Transportation: $10 total

Due to the above savings we will be much less rigorous in budgeting for food and events. Though walking around and sightseeing is free and will be a lot of what we do.

Food: ~$150-200 (I'm really looking forward to this and it might go higher, you can't skimp on food in NO)

Attractions: $100

Total Cost for 3.5 days in NO: $320-$370.

So $50/day/person.

Nice!

I have done a few $1 megabus trips + staying at hostels.    It was around $60 for a weekend trip to Philadelphia and DC.

I would love to do that, sadly my wife is a temporary and hesitant mustachian due to necessity. She wants things a bit "nicer" than I do.

NICE! I  hope you have fun, NO is such a great city! Their food and culture is unique, I encourage you not to worry so much about expenses when it comes to eating foods. It's been 13 years since I've been there, but I still remember going with pristine detail.

Sounds great! Agree about not skimping on things like food. Life is too short and you're already saving on the big stuff.

Muffuletta sandwiches at Central Grocery-- Life changing.

Enjoy!

Enjoy!  We used to go to NO twice a year over the last 5 years or so.

We're a little burned out on it now, but its a blast for a first timer.

Our costs were usually only food and entertainment.  We used to drive, but just started taking flights on points.

Be careful not to get pulled into many high priced restaurants.  K-Pauls is great food for instance, but way too expensive.  You can find reasonable and really good food off the beaten paths.

I've always had good luck with Tripadvisor when there and looking for something new.

The key is indeed knowing and staying with people who live there.  I'm sure we'll go back someday.

Sounds like fun. I love NOLA.  BTW, we lived in Huntsville until Oct 2014.  We are now FIREd and live in Grant, Al.
