Monetizing my guest room
« on: September 22, 2015, 12:40:19 PM »
No, I'm not opening a brothel... Nor are we doing Air B and B.  We live in a small college town that draws lots of alums/parents for events and is always running short on hotel rooms.  We signed up through the Alumni office to offer our very nice/private guest room downstairs to renters 4-5 weekends/ per year.

Kind of a painless way to make $75/night (including light breakfast).  And I think we'll enjoy meeting the people who come to stay.  Most are parents (about our age) of college kids.

** No need to comment about the IRS limits on renting tax free, I'm aware:-)

That is a good idea! Makes me wish I lived closer to a university!

Nice! I would do that if it was a program offered in my area.

We host a foreign exchange student for 2 weeks every year and usually make around $30 a day. Of course, we turn around and spend it taking our student on a weekend trip - but we have fun too, so win-win :)

I understand your view.  We do alot with/for students too.  Part of it is the joy of connecting with other cultures and new people.

This is perfect for us.  We both work full time.  I always thought owning a "home away" type rental property would be fun, but I think that's more work than we have time for right now.  We can dip our toes in this way and see if we like it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
